On Thursday, The U.S. House January 6 Committee decided to hold its first hearing in months subpoenaing former President Donald Trump to testify before it. This is in an effort to put some “there” there, since they have failed to produce any legitimate evidence tying him to the Capitol riot.
Note in their desperation they have planned this just days before the 2022 midterm elections. How appropriately timed. Will they be holding a parade to mark the event also? They are really fishing for a bombshell discovery that is not there – plain and simple.
Committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) explained that Trump was at the “center” of events surrounding the Capitol riot. Why then have they not been able to tie him to anything, if he was such a central player? Why are they turning over rock after rock to find something? – really anything.
That they now need for him to testify, they say “goes beyond our fact-finding” toward “accountability” to the American people as a whole. Who needs to be accountable ? The actual facts don’t support their theory that he instigated this event. Again, they are seeking to find some “there” there. This hand-picked committee by Nancy Pelosi, would like nothing better than to twist whatever information they could glean into charges. This is just another witch hunt and now they need someone at the stake.
Proposed by outgoing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), a staunch opponent of Trump, whose stance caused her to lose her primary to retain her congressional seat, the vote to approve the subpoena was unanimous, along with the resolution to compel Trump’s testimony. Of course, it was unanimous, the drama needed a drum roll!
There is not one fair-minded person on this mockery of a committee. Furthermore, why did they leak their decision now, except that they wanted the press to pick it up and create bad publicity for those candidates that Trump is currently supporting – demonstrating the low level of integrity they all have.
In defiance of the enabling resolution, this committee is composed solely of members of Congress who are against Trump, hand-picked by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Cheney, however, is not a “ranking member” of the committee, as described in the enabling resolution, but is referred to as the “vice chair.” Opponents argue, that without a ranking member, as described in the resolution, the committee lacks the power to enforce its subpoenas. Therefore, its authority is being challenged in federal court.

Rep. Thompson, and other members of the committee, who had objected to past presidential election results being certified (the very same act described by the committee as an attempt to overthrow democracy) defended their quest to keep the fires of this hunt burning. Despite the fact that the members of the committee cited Trump’s allegedly “personal and substantial role” in the riot of January 6th – they have produced no such evidence. In fact, they read from a Teleprompter in their highly-scripted “hearings” that has been likened to a show trial rather than a congressional inquiry.
Given executive privilege, and the question of whether they can by law really forcibly subpoena anyone, it is unlikely the committee can compel Trump’s testimony. However, this same committee has prompted no less than two prosecutions for contempt of Congress, against witnesses who refused to testify and who cited legal reasons for not cooperating. Again, if you don’t find what you are looking for – waste more tax-payers money and keep turning over the next stone.
This is not about the facts, but cooking up something based on whatever minute presuppositional piece of dirt they can scrape off the rocks collectively. They are attempting to manufacture truth, that is not there. A really good example of what the Democrats do to appear busy, accomplishing nothing while wasting taxpayers’ time and money.
