California Dreaming - Sen. Dianne Feinstein Introduces Another Bill to Ban 205 “Assault Weapons” .

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) introduced legislation Monday to ban “205 military-style assault weapons by name” and prohibit transfer of “high capacity” magazines. Feinstein’s bill requires “a background check on any future sale, trade or gifting of an assault weapon covered by the bill.” (This would apply to guns grandfathered in, if the bill were to become law.) and additionally bans the “sale, manufacture, transfer and importation” of 205 specific firearms.

Her bill also contains an addendum to “[prohibit] the sale of assault weapons to individuals under 21.” Citing the January 21, 2023, Monterey Park shooting as the impetus for the reintroduction of the “assault weapons” ban, Feinstein stated-

“We were tragically reminded this weekend of the deadly nature of assault weapons when a shooter used one to kill 11 people and injure 9 more at a Lunar New Year celebration in California.”

According to the Post, California has passed significant amounts of gun control, the strength of which is undercut by loser laws in other states and the fact that Americans believe they have a right to possess firearms:

Reportedly, the gun-control advocacy group, Gifford’s, considers California’s patchwork of gun laws to be the strongest in the nation. The post reported-

“But Saturday night’s horrific mass killing at a Monterey Park dance hall shows how the state’s strict gun laws are incapable of fully preventing gun violence in a country where gun ownership is widely considered a constitutionally protected right, firearms move freely between states with vastly different regulations and gun-control measures are dotted with exceptions”.

“The Public Policy Institute of California, a nonpartisan organization that studies the state’s policies and politics, found the state’s death rate from large-scale shooting incidents from 2019 to 2021 was below the national average.”

Truthfully though, Feinstein’s proposed ban would not have prevented the suspected gunman from possessing the gun used in the attack. Gun laws don’t guarantee that persons will not be harmed, as firearms do not kill people – disreputable people do. Laws with regulations as proposed here, do nothing forestall crime, as honest gun owners are the only ones, who care about the law – criminals and/ or the mentally ill do not.

Feinstein’s law, focuses on keeping youth from buying these weapons, however, both alleged attackers were 72 years old and  67 years old respectively. Effectively, gun laws do not work except to serve as a reminder that no law will prevent someone with access to a gun, from killing someone or anyone for that matter.

“Some politicians and gun control proponents argue that these laws are necessary — even at the cost of infringing upon a fundamental American right. But the fact is, gun control doesn’t work the way advocates argue it does.”
