Veteran Democrat Jan Schakowsky to retire ahead of 2026 midterms

 May 6, 2025

Another entrenched Democrat is stepping away from Congress, signaling a shift in Illinois politics ahead of a pivotal midterm season.

On Jan. 6, 2025, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a long-serving liberal from Illinois’s 9th District, announced she will not seek reelection in 2026. Her exit after 26 years raises questions about the future of her progressive legacy.

The Daily Caller reported that Schakowsky, 80, has represented the 9th District since 1999. She previously served in the Illinois House from 1991 to 1998. Her retirement follows a career marked by a focus on health care and senior issues.

In her announcement, Schakowsky expressed pride in her role in passing the Affordable Care Act. She claimed it ensured coverage for millions and protected those with pre-existing conditions. Yet, many Americans still struggle with rising health care costs under the law’s complex framework.

Schakowsky’s Long Congressional Tenure Ends

“I am incredibly proud of the things I have been able to accomplish,” Schakowsky said. Her statement highlighted her work on the Affordable Care Act as a cornerstone of her tenure. However, critics argue the law burdens small businesses and working families.

Schakowsky’s decision comes amid a wave of Democratic retirements. Sen. Dick Durbin announced his exit on Jan. 1, 2025, after 44 years in Congress. Rep. Gerry Connolly also stepped down in April 2024, citing health concerns.

The timing of Schakowsky’s retirement is notable, as she faced a tough primary challenge. Kat Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old social media influencer, declared her candidacy for the 9th District in March 2025. Abughazaleh’s campaign has drawn comparisons to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Abughazaleh, born just after Schakowsky took office, represents a new generation of left-wing activists. She previously worked for Media Matters, a group known for targeting conservative voices. Her brash style, exemplified by her telling Democrats to “grow a spine,” signals a shift toward radical progressivism.

Schakowsky acknowledged the changing political landscape in her statement. “We are so fortunate in the 9th District that there are dozens of talented leaders,” she said.

She expressed confidence in the next generation to continue her fight against what she calls the “extreme MAGA agenda.”

Yet, Schakowsky’s rhetoric reveals a disconnect with many working-class Americans. Her focus on issues like universal health care and reproductive rights often overshadows the economic struggles of small business owners. Her retirement may reflect growing frustration with establishment Democrats.

Retirement Amid Shifting Political Winds

“While I will miss serving the 9th District in an elected capacity, I am not going anywhere,” Schakowsky vowed. She promised to keep fighting for her progressive causes beyond her term. Her commitment to activism suggests she’ll remain a vocal critic of conservative policies.

Schakowsky also thanked her staff for their dedication over the years. Their support, she said, was crucial to her long tenure. Such loyalty is rare in today’s polarized political climate.

Abughazaleh’s rise highlights the growing influence of social media in politics. Her candidacy, fueled by viral online presence, appeals to younger voters. However, her lack of governing experience raises doubts about her ability to represent the district effectively.

Schakowsky’s exit opens the door for a contentious Democratic primary. Abughazaleh’s progressive platform may clash with more moderate voices in the district. The outcome will shape the future of Illinois’s 9th District.

“Glad to see new faces getting involved,” Schakowsky said, nodding to Abughazaleh’s campaign. Her words suggest a reluctant embrace of the new guard. Still, she urged continued resistance against President Trump’s policies.
