U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan Sets Trump’s J6 Trial Date For Eve Of Super Tuesday

 August 28, 2023

Scheduled the day before Super Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has set the trial date for former President Donald Trump’s federal case for March 4, 2024. The charges allege that he attempted to overturn the 2020 election results. Chutkan’s decision comes on the heels of her denial of a request by Trump’s legal team’s for a Spring 2026 date.

More than a dozen states hold their caucuses or primaries, marking one of the most momentous days of the presidential primary process on March 5. According to the Associated Press, Chutkan said Monday-

“The public has a right to prompt and efficient resolution of this matter,” [also remarking] “Setting a trial date does not depend and should not depend on the defendant’s personal and professional obligations,”… “Mr. Trump, like any defendant, will have to make the trial date work regardless of his schedule.”

Originally, prosecutors under Special Counsel Jack Smith, had been seeking a trial date in January, which was weeks ahead of the Iowa Caucuses. Quick to weigh in, slamming the move as “Straight up election interference” was Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who has endorsed Trump for the Republican presidential nomination.

In the case, Trump faces four counts, including “Conspiracy to Defraud the United States,” “Conspiracy to Obstruct an Official Proceeding,” “Obstruction of and Attempt to Obstruct an Official Proceeding,” and “Conspiracy Against Rights.” These charges carry a maximum of 55 years if he is convicted on all counts. In the past five months, this indictment marks just one of four criminal cases, that President Joe Biden’s Justice Department, and liberal district attorneys in New York and Georgia have brought against him.

“Corruption is a cancer, a cancer that eats away at a citizen’s faith in democracy, diminishes the instinct for innovation and creativity.”
