U.S. attorney investigating Chuck Schumer for threats against DOGE workers

 February 20, 2025

An unprecedented investigation titled "Operation Whirlwind" has been launched by interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin, targeting threats directed at DOGE workers and notably targeting Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

Reuters confirmed that Martin is probing threats reported by a Department of Government Efficiency employee that potentially involved Senator Schumer.

DOGE was initially established by President Donald Trump and has been responsible for significant workforce reductions across the federal government.

The name "Operation Whirlwind" links back to contentious comments made by Schumer in 2020 towards Supreme Court Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.

Context Behind Schumer’s Involvement and Response

Senator Schumer's office has promptly responded to inquiries about his involvement, indicating that his prior comments at a rally were of a political nature, not threatening.

Michael Lynch, Schumer's Chief of Staff, submitted a written clarification, emphasizing that Schumer's remarks were not meant as threats but were part of a larger rhetorical strategy pertaining to the political landscape.

This investigation by Martin also comes at a time when Schumer had been criticized for his sharp words, which he later regretted in a Senate floor speech.

Ed Martin's approach to handling sensitive information has raised concerns, as he has been noted to discuss non-public details on social media platforms, violating Justice Department guidelines.

This isn't Martin’s first brush with controversy; before his current role, he openly supported figures associated with the January 6 Capitol riots—a stance that aligns closely with Trump’s later actions granting clemency to several individuals involved.

The prosecutor has been accused of pressing a subordinate into pursuing an investigation without adequate evidence, further compounding the concerns surrounding his conduct.

The backdrop of "Operation Whirlwind" involves multiple threats received by Martin’s office, specifically aimed at those involved in the release of individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 events.

According to Martin, these threats are not only unlawful but also undermine the safety and security of federal employees diligently performing their duties.

The urgency of these investigations is further highlighted by Martin's direct communication with Senator Schumer and his public denouncements of the threats aimed at federal workers.

Public and Political Reactions to the Investigations

"Late last night I took a call from a senior DOGE staffer. We spoke about some pressing tech issues and then he told me about threats against DOGE workers. It is despicable that these men and women are being threatened," said Ed Martin, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

He also noted that Schumer had not responded to his requests for an explanation regarding what Martin perceived as threats.

Schumer earlier clarified his comments, stating, "I should not have used the words I used yesterday. My point was that there would be political consequences," attempting to distance himself from any intent of real-world harm.

This "clarification" by Schumer reflects the often fiery but traditionally non-violent nature of political rhetoric, as well as the importance of maintaining clear and responsible communication by public officials.

This investigation promises to be a thorough review of not only the specific threats but also of how high-stakes political communications are handled in an increasingly polarized environment.
