 February 18, 2025

The resurgence of President Donald Trump in leadership has sparked renewed interest in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions toward fostering peace and economic progress. Mediterranean officials are expressing high hopes for the expansion of diplomatic agreements and economic projects that might positively transform the region.

Breitbart reported that Mediterranean and Middle Eastern leaders anticipate enhanced peace and economic ties with the expansion of the Abraham Accords and new initiatives.

At the Delphi Forum organized by the Hellenic American Leadership Council in Washington, DC, high-ranking officials from Cyprus and Greece shared their views on the evolving geopolitical landscape following Trump’s recent assumption of office.

Greek and Cypriot Officials Speak at Delphi Forum

Greek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexandra Papadopoulou, expressed her enthusiasm for Trump's reinvigorated interest in the Eastern Mediterranean.

She underscored the potential broadening of the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations initiated under Trump’s previous administration.

Papadopoulou discussed the strategic importance of developing the India-Middle East–Europe (IMEC) economic corridor. She emphasized this initiative's potential to enhance regional economic opportunities and ensure political stability.

Highlighting the geographical advantages of their countries, both Papadopoulou and Nicholas Ioannides, Cyprus’s Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, discussed how these positions could serve as vital links in extending peace and economic growth throughout the region.

Ionnides expressed Cyprus's readiness to act as a central hub in the rejuvenation and expansion of the Abraham Accords.

With its strategic location, Cyprus underscores its role as a connecting point for commerce and diplomacy between Europe and the Middle East.

Ioannides further noted Cyprus's capabilities in serving as a humanitarian hub and its strong existing relations with other regional states. These factors position it well to enhance the scope and impact of what he referred to as "Abraham Accords 2.0."

The enthusiastic reception of Trump's policies in the region reflects a significant interest in sustained U.S. involvement that many feared was waning.

During the forum, Julie Rayman of the American Jewish Committee commented on the economic dimensions of the Abraham Accords. She pointed out the critical role of Israel's economic prosperity in underpinning these agreements.

However, she also highlighted the challenges following the terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, which had impacted the region's stability and economic outlook. Rayman is optimistic about the recovery of Israel’s economy and believes it is crucial for the success of new peace deals.

Rayman underscored the potential for new partnerships and the necessity of overcoming economic hurdles to realize the potential of expanded Accords engagements.

Future Perspectives on Middle East Relations

Papadopoulou, reflecting on the changing dynamics, underscored the delicate balance between political and economic interests that need to be managed to foster regional peace and stability.

Both Papadopoulou and Ioannides reiterated the importance of collaborative decision-making and active communication with the U.S. to ensure the continued expansion and effectiveness of the Abraham Accords and related initiatives.

The revival of these efforts under Trump’s leadership has not only enhanced the geopolitical significance of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions but also catalyzed a fresh wave of optimism about future peace and prosperity.

The discussions at the Delphi Forum underline the importance of proactive U.S. involvement in the Mediterranean's geopolitical matters, reflecting a stark contrast to the perceived withdrawal during previous leadership periods.

Leaders from the region place substantial hope in the active participation of the U.S., which they believe is crucial for the successful realization of their economic and political goals.
