Trump vows retaliation against D.C. after mayor suggests police will stop cooperating with ICE

 September 16, 2025

President Donald Trump has drawn a line in the sand, promising to stop Washington, D.C., from slipping back into sanctuary city status with a defiant stand against local resistance.

The Daily Caller reported that Trump has warned that he will not permit the nation’s capital to cease cooperation with federal immigration authorities, even threatening to declare a national emergency and take control of the city’s police force if push comes to shove.

This clash began heating up in early August when Trump declared a crime emergency in D.C., placing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under federal oversight and deploying hundreds of National Guard members to tackle rampant crime.

Following that emergency declaration, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued an executive order compelling D.C.—long known for its sanctuary policies—to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, a sharp turn from past practices.

The results spoke volumes: a Daily Caller analysis of MPD data revealed a 21% drop in crime compared to the same period last year, and a staggering 33% reduction from two years prior, painting a picture of undeniable progress.

Even Mayor Muriel Bowser had to tip her hat, publicly admitting that the federal surge played a key role in curbing crime, with safer neighborhoods as the tangible payoff.

Bowser Acknowledges Federal Help, Then Pivots

“We know that when carjackings go down, when the use of guns goes down, when homicide or robbery goes down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer,” Bowser stated, giving credit where it’s due. But let’s not get too cozy—her nod to federal help feels like a fleeting courtesy before the inevitable clash.

In September, Bowser issued her own directive to align local police with federal law enforcement, seemingly playing ball for a moment while the emergency order held strong.

Yet, Congress declined to extend Trump’s 30-day emergency authority over the MPD, letting it lapse and setting the stage for a showdown as Bowser signaled a return to old ways.

With the emergency order expired, Bowser made it clear she expects the MPD to revert to its pre-emergency stance, effectively pulling the plug on cooperation with ICE.

Her office stayed mum when pressed for comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation, leaving observers to wonder if this silence is strategic or simply dismissive of the brewing storm.

Trump, never one to back down, took to Truth Social with a fiery response, vowing, “I’ll call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!” That’s not just a warning—it’s a promise to double down against what he sees as a dangerous rollback.

Trump’s Resolve Meets Local Resistance

The President’s frustration is palpable as he watches a city he believes was turned around under federal oversight now risk sliding back under local policies he views as reckless.

While National Guard members stood watch near the Washington Monument earlier this month, their presence symbolized a fleeting federal grip on a city teetering between order and ideological defiance.

This tug-of-war between Trump’s law-and-order push and Bowser’s apparent pivot to progressive priorities isn’t just a D.C. problem—it’s a microcosm of a national debate on immigration enforcement and local autonomy that’s far from settled.
