Trump urges FBI action against Texas Democrats evading redistricting vote

 August 6, 2025

Texas Democrats have bolted out of state to dodge a critical redistricting vote, and former President Donald Trump is calling for the FBI to round them up.

The Washington Examiner reported that Texas House Democrats have fled to Democrat-friendly states like Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts to block a Republican-led redistricting plan that could hand the GOP five additional congressional seats in 2026, prompting outrage from Texas leaders and national figures alike.

This saga kicked off when the Democrats packed their bags and left Texas, refusing to provide the quorum needed for the state legislature to push through the new map.

Their absence has effectively stalled the process, leaving the approval of the plan in limbo. It’s a bold move, but one that’s drawn sharp criticism for abandoning their posts.

Texas Leaders Demand Democrats’ Return

Gov. Greg Abbott has not minced words, threatening arrests and even expulsion from office if these lawmakers don’t hightail it back to Austin.

“Texas Democrats abandoned their duties and fled to blue states with gross gerrymandering that has distorted our country’s politics,” Abbott posted on X, slamming their actions as a betrayal of voter choice. One has to wonder if running away is the way to fight for democracy, or just a way to dodge the tough debates.

Former President Trump echoed Abbott’s frustration, suggesting the FBI “may have to” step in to drag these lawmakers back.

“It looked like the Democrats had abandoned the state,” Trump remarked, painting their exit as a dereliction of duty. If the feds get involved, as Trump and Sen. John Cornyn are pushing for, the Democrats could face real consequences given the FBI’s far-reaching jurisdiction.

Trump didn’t stop there, urging the absent legislators to return and face the music. “You can’t just sit it out,” he insisted, calling for them to “fight it out” in the legislative arena. Isn’t that what elections are supposed to be about—showing up, not skipping town when the going gets tough?

Meanwhile, the Texas Democrats aren’t budging, with state Rep. Lulu Flores declaring they “plan to stay as long as it takes.”

Their self-imposed exile could last until the special session wraps up on Aug. 19, according to Flores, who called that duration the “very least” they expect to be gone. It’s a gamble, but one that raises questions about whether this is principled resistance or just political posturing.

They’ve found allies in blue-state governors like Illinois’ JB Pritzker, who proudly stood with them at a press conference.

“The state of Illinois is proud to stand side by side with these brave, Texas Democrat heroes,” Pritzker declared, framing their flight as a noble stand for democracy. But isn’t it ironic to champion democracy while refusing to participate in the legislative process?

Pritzker’s support isn’t an isolated gesture; it reflects a broader Democratic strategy to counter Republican redistricting efforts across the country.

The Texas Democrats have even hinted at retaliating with their redistricting plans if the GOP map gets approved. It’s a tit-for-tat approach that could further polarize an already divided political landscape.

FBI Involvement: A Federal Showdown?

Sen. John Cornyn has added fuel to the fire, penning a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel urging federal assistance in tracking down these lawmakers.

Describing it as a “time-sensitive matter,” Cornyn argued that the FBI should aid Texas law enforcement in locating and arresting those who’ve fled. It’s a drastic step, but with Texas’s limited power to act across state lines, federal intervention might be the only way to force a resolution.

Trump, never one to shy away from a bold statement, also highlighted the potential political windfall for Republicans, noting the party “expects to pick up five seats” with the new map. But without a quorum, that gain remains a pipe dream for now. One can’t help but ask if the Democrats’ strategy is less about principle and more about delaying the inevitable.

The standoff has turned into a high-stakes game of chicken, with Texas Republican leaders like Abbott demanding the Democrats’ return while their out-of-state hosts cheer them on.

It’s a messy situation, and the longer it drags on, the more it risks undermining public trust in the legislative process. Shouldn’t elected officials be solving problems, not creating new ones by running away?

For now, the redistricting map remains on hold, its fate tied to whether these lawmakers return or are compelled to do so. Texas’s inability to enforce arrests outside its borders leaves the situation in a frustrating limbo, unless federal authorities step in. The question looms: how long can this evasion tactic hold before it backfires?

Trump’s frustration is palpable when he notes that a “lot of people” are demanding that the Democrats come back, including Abbott and other state officials.

It’s hard to argue with the sentiment that walking away from duty isn’t the answer, no matter how much one disagrees with a policy. Perhaps it’s time for cooler heads to prevail and for dialogue to replace this dramatic exodus.
