Trump swaps out Andrew Jackson for Ronald Reagan in Oval Office portrait overhaul

 February 17, 2025

The Oval Office has undergone a significant transformation under President Donald Trump, with new decorations including a prominent portrait of Ronald Reagan according to The Daily Mail.

This redecoration, marked by the replacement of Andrew Jackson's portrait with Ronald Reagan's on February 11, 2025, symbolizes a shift in presidential ideological focus.

Upon his recent return to office, President Trump made changes to the Oval Office's decor, initially placing notable portraits of past presidents and other commemorative items around the room. Previously, Andrew Jackson’s portrait took a position of prominence alongside George Washington's smaller portrait.

These portraits were arranged above the 'Bronco Buster,' a sculpture by Frederic Remington, positioned to the right of the historical Resolute Desk. This setup remained until early February 2025.

Trump's Presidential Portrait Updates Revealed

Photos from February 5, 2025, during the swearing-in of Attorney General Pam Bondi, still show the Jackson and Washington portraits in their traditional places.

However, by the time Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was sworn in, a new arrangement was already spotlighting Ronald Reagan’s portrait.

The large portrait of Ronald Reagan, along with a smaller portrait of Thomas Jefferson positioned above it, replaced the earlier depictions of Jackson and Washington. This alteration was publicly highlighted by President Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff, Dan Scavino, who expressed enthusiasm about the change.

Scavino's excitement was captured in his statement, where he remarked, "AWESOME! A portrait of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan — is now hanging up in The Oval Office."

Alongside the swap in presidential portraits, the Oval Office saw the introduction of other significant items. Notably, a map has been renamed to "Gulf of America," and a striking large bronze circle sculpture representing Abraham Lincoln was added.

Furthermore, President Trump has included a replica of the FIFA World Cup trophy, indicating a diverse range of interests and symbols being incorporated into the office's decor.

The Oval Office’s changes extend beyond simply portraits and maps. The space that once displayed a collection of military challenge coins behind the president's desk has been cleared, making room for new decorative elements.

Andrew Jackson Still Commemorated in Trump's Office

Despite being replaced by Reagan's portrait, Andrew Jackson's presence is not completely removed from the Oval Office.

The portrait of Jackson has been moved to another location within the office, ensuring his continued presence in the backdrop of presidential engagements.

In addition to the relocated portrait, a statue of Jackson now stands behind the president at the Resolute Desk, signifying an ongoing commemoration of his historical impact.

The alterations in the Oval Office reflect a nuanced redirection in historical focus and presidential admiration, with Ronald Reagan coming to the fore, possibly indicating shifts in policy or presidential inspiration drawn from different aspects of American history.
