Trump Sides With Dockworkers In Automation Dispute With Impending Strike

 December 15, 2024

In a recent turn of events, President-elect Trump has sided with dockworkers amid their opposition to the automation of U.S. ports. His transition team is gearing up for crucial discussions with the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX).

Fox News reported that amid threats of strikes by dockworkers, President-elect Trump shows support against port automation, signaling potentially significant policy directions before his inauguration.

The dispute centers around the automation processes at U.S. ports, a move supported by the USMX to enhance safety and efficiency but opposed by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA). The ILA argued that automation would lead to job losses, affecting many American workers directly.

Last October, the ILA went on strike, disrupting operations at ports across the US East and Gulf Coasts. The strike was temporarily resolved with a contract extension valid until January 15, 2025, which included a significant pay rise for the dockworkers.

However, the real contention remained unresolved as discussions on automation broke down. This breakdown in negotiations prompted an intervention by Trump, who has been vocal about his skepticism towards automation in the industry.

Trump Expresses Solidarity With Dockworkers Facing Automation

Trump's meeting with ILA leaders like President Harold Daggett and Executive Vice President Dennis Daggett underscored his commitment to the workers' cause. In various statements, Trump criticized the push for automation, pointing out the detrimental impact on American labor.

"The amount of money saved [from automation] is nowhere near the distress, hurt, and harm it causes for American Workers, in this case, our Longshoremen," Trump stated, emphasizing his alignment with the workers over technological advancements.

He further lambasted foreign companies for prioritizing profits over people, expressing his displeasure with their business practices in the U.S.: "They shouldn’t be looking for every last penny knowing how many families are hurt," Trump remarked.

The USMX, on the other hand, argues that automation not only helps improve safety but also increases efficiency and strengthens the overall supply chain in the U.S. They issued a statement acknowledging Trump's concerns but highlighted the broader benefits of technological advancements.

"We appreciate and value the president-elect’s statement on the importance of American ports... However, to sustain and improve upon these results, we need modern technology that is proven to improve worker safety, boost port efficiency, and increase port capacity," the USMX explained.

The organization also stressed the importance of its contract beyond the docks, highlighting its role in supporting the entire U.S. economy — from farmers to small businesses and startups seeking global market access.

Crucial Meeting Set to Shape Future Policies

While the details and exact date of the meeting between Trump's transition team and the USMX have not been disclosed, the stakes are undoubtedly high.

This discussion could very well determine the immediate future of port operations in the U.S., balancing between modernization and job protection.

Trump concluded his series of comments with a direct appeal to foreign companies, urging them to prioritize American workers: "For the great privilege of accessing our markets, these foreign companies should hire our incredible American Workers instead of laying them off," he argued.

The upcoming negotiations will be a pivotal moment for U.S. ports, as decisions made could have long-term implications for both the workforce and the supply chain. With Trump's transition team actively involved, the resolution could set a precedent for how automation and employment issues are handled in the U.S. moving forward.
