Trump sets sights on Chicago for major crime crackdown

 August 24, 2025

President Donald Trump is coming for Democrat cities with a federal sledgehammer to smash crime and unauthorized migration.

News 18 reported that following a bold federal intervention in Washington, D.C., Trump has set his sights on Chicago, Illinois, as the next battleground in his mission to restore law and order, with plans for military and National Guard deployment stirring fierce debate among local leaders.

Trump’s recent statement on Friday showcased his ongoing National Guard operation in D.C., where over 2,200 troops have been dispatched to curb crime rates. Now, Chicago is next on the list, alongside New York, as Trump explicitly named these cities as targets for similar federal crackdowns.

“We are going to make our cities very, very safe,” Trump declared, taking a sharp jab at Chicago’s leadership by calling the mayor “grossly incompetent.” Well, that’s one way to win friends in the Windy City—call out the top brass and promise a federal fix that’s “not even tough.”

According to reports from The Washington Post, the Pentagon has been crafting a plan for weeks to send military personnel to Chicago, potentially for several weeks, alongside a few thousand National Guard troops to tackle crime, homelessness, and unauthorized migration.

Military Plans Spark Local Backlash

This isn’t a sudden brainstorm—officials familiar with the matter say the Chicago deployment has been in the works for quite some time.

The operation also ties into a broader push from the White House, with Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller directing Immigration and Customs Enforcement to ramp up efforts, aiming for at least 3,000 arrests of undocumented migrants per day.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Pam Bondi is turning up the heat, sending letters to state and local officials challenging so-called “sanctuary policies” that she argues obstruct law enforcement, promising legal battles ahead.

But not everyone is rolling out the red carpet for Trump’s plans—Illinois Governor JB Pritzker fired back with a blistering critique.

“Trump’s goal is to incite fear in our communities and destabilize existing public safety efforts,” Pritzker said, accusing the president of authoritarian overreach. While his concern for public safety is noted, one has to wonder if rejecting federal help outright is the best way to protect Illinois citizens from spiraling crime stats.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson echoed the sentiment, calling Trump’s approach “uncoordinated” and “unsound.” Fair enough, but with no official notice from the federal government yet, as per The Washington Post, it seems like local leaders are swinging at shadows rather than engaging in a real dialogue.

Communication Gaps Fuel Tensions

Speaking of dialogue—or the lack thereof—a spokesperson for Pritzker confirmed that no one from Trump’s team has reached out to the governor’s office to discuss these military plans.

Despite the silence, Chicago officials are taking the warnings seriously, even as the Trump administration presses state and local leaders to cede more control over finding and deporting undocumented migrants.

At the heart of this standoff is a fundamental clash of visions: Trump’s push for federal dominance in urban safety versus local leaders’ insistence on autonomy. It’s a classic tug-of-war between centralized authority and state rights, with Chicago as the proving ground.

While progressive policies often prioritize community trust over strict enforcement, the hard reality of crime and border security can’t be ignored—something Trump seems determined to address, whether locals like it or not.
