Trump halts all funding to Colombia over leftist president enabling cartels

 October 20, 2025

President Donald Trump just dropped a diplomatic bombshell, slamming Colombian President Gustavo Petro with sharp accusations and pulling the financial plug on a key Latin American ally.

Breitbart reported that in a fiery social media post on a Sunday morning in mid-October 2025, Trump accused Petro of enabling rampant drug production and declared an immediate end to all U.S. payments and subsidies to Colombia, while also touting a recent military strike against narcoterrorists linked to the country.

The drama kicked off the day prior, on Saturday, when Trump revealed that his administration had targeted a vessel carrying dangerous narcotics and several known narcoterrorists, at least two hailing from Colombia and Ecuador.

Striking Hard Against Narcoterrorist Threats

U.S. intelligence confirmed the vessel was packed with fentanyl and other illegal drugs, enough to potentially kill tens of thousands of Americans if it had reached shore.

During the operation, two of the four narcoterrorists on board were killed, while the surviving pair are being sent back to their home countries—Ecuador and Colombia—for detention and legal action.

Colombian President Petro acknowledged the return of one suspect, stating, “We are glad he is alive and he will be prosecuted according to the law." While Petro’s response seems measured, it hardly addresses the broader criticism coming from Washington about his leadership on this issue.

On Sunday morning, Trump didn’t hold back, taking to Truth Social to label Petro as a key figure in Colombia’s drug crisis and accusing him of turning a blind eye to an industry that has allegedly become the nation’s largest.

“The purpose of this drug production is the sale of massive amounts of product into the United States, causing death, destruction, and havoc,” Trump declared. If that’s not a wake-up call for American policymakers about border security and foreign aid, what is?

Trump went further, warning that if Petro fails to tackle what he called the “killing fields” in Colombia, the U.S. will step in—and not with a polite handshake.

Financial Fallout for Colombia Now

The decision to cut off payments and subsidies to Colombia is a bold move, signaling that the U.S. won’t bankroll nations it believes are contributing to the drug epidemic plaguing American communities.

Trump’s frustration is palpable, as he argues that past financial support has been a one-sided deal, benefiting Colombia while American families suffer the consequences of unchecked trafficking.

Critics of progressive foreign policy might nod in agreement, seeing this as a long-overdue stand against nations that fail to align with U.S. interests on critical issues like narcotics control.

While Trump’s rhetoric is undeniably sharp, the underlying concern about drugs flooding into the U.S. from South America is a bipartisan issue that deserves serious attention, not just soundbites.

The recent strike on the narcoterrorist vessel shows a willingness to act decisively, but long-term solutions will require more than military operations or funding cuts—cooperation with allies must be part of the equation.

For now, Trump’s hardline stance has put Colombia on notice, and Petro’s response—or lack thereof—could shape the future of U.S.-Colombia relations in a time when trust is already strained.
