Trump confirms Associated Press banned from White House until 'gulf of America' adopted

President Donald Trump has taken drastic measures against the Associated Press, enforcing a ban from significant White House areas over a naming dispute concerning a major body of water.

Newsmax reported that Trump insists the ban will remain until the news agency adopts his administration's preferred name, the "Gulf of America," for the previously known Gulf of Mexico.

The conflict started early this month when President Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. This move has stirred considerable international and domestic discussion. Trump announced the enforcement of this ban at a press conference held at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday.

The Associated Press' policies stipulate that they refer to the body of water by its longstanding name, the Gulf of Mexico, in its initial mention. This is a reflection of the recognition of the name by other countries and a significant portion of their reader base.

Following this policy decision, the Trump administration began to restrict AP reporters' access to important White House events on February 11, beginning with the exclusion of two AP journalists from separate meetings.

White House Justifies Decision

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the administration’s stance in a recent briefing. Leavitt emphasized that "the Gulf of America" is now the officially designated term in the geographical identification name server and mentioned that entities like Apple and Google had recognized the change.

She stated, "It is a fact that the body of water off the coast of Louisiana is called the Gulf of America, and I'm not sure why news outlets don't want to call it that but that is what it is." Leavitt also reaffirmed the administration's prerogative to determine who is allowed access to the Oval Office.

Clarifying the administration's rights, Leavitt remarked, "Nobody has the right to go into the Oval Office and ask the president of the United States questions," implying that press access could be contingent on compliance with administration policies.

The decision to bar AP reporters has not gone without vocal opposition from journalistic and press freedom groups. The White House Correspondents' Association, alongside various press freedom organizations, has criticized the move, calling for a reassessment of the decision.

The Associated Press stated the situation, stating, "The actions taken to restrict AP's coverage of presidential events because of how we refer to a geographic location chip away at this important right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution for all Americans."

In his remarks, President Trump made his position clear, expressing no intention to yield until the Associated Press complies.

He stated, "We are gonna keep them out until such time that they agree that it's the Gulf of America," adding, "We're very proud of this country, and we want it to be the Gulf of America."

Further Developments and Global Recognition Efforts

During her briefing, Secretary Leavitt mentioned the significance the administration places on worldwide recognition of the new name.

She said, "The secretary of Interior has made that the official designation in the geographical identification name server. This change is very important to this administration that we get that right, not just for people here at home but also for the rest of the world."

Trump's assertive actions and forthcoming statements underscore a broader agenda to instill a specific narrative domestically and internationally.

"The Associated Press just refuses to go with what the law is and what has taken place," Trump lamented, asserting his authority by saying, "I have the right to do it."

The ongoing standoff continues to garner attention as discussions about the implications for journalistic independence and the broader international community evolve. "They're doing us no favors, and I guess I'm not doing them any favors. That's the way life works," concluded Trump, signaling a potentially prolonged conflict if the resolution is not reached soon.
