Word has leaked that the Trump Department of Justice is gearing up to investigate George Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF) with some serious firepower.
The bombshell report from The New York Times reveals that several U.S. attorneys’ offices have been directed to draft plans for probing OSF over allegations of arson, racketeering, wire fraud, and even material support for terrorism, following claims that the organization has funneled millions to groups linked to violence and extremism.
The Daily Caller reported that this directive, reportedly issued on a Monday from a lawyer in Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s office, was sent to U.S. attorneys in major cities like California, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Detroit, and Maryland.
It’s no small potatoes when the feds start eyeing an organization with this kind of scrutiny. One has to wonder if this is about law and order or a political chess move in a polarized landscape.
The heat on OSF stems from a Capital Research Center (CRC) report claiming that since 2016, the foundation has poured over $80 million into organizations tied to terrorism or extremist violence. That’s a staggering sum, and if true, it raises eyebrows about where philanthropy ends and something darker begins.
More specifically, the CRC report alleges OSF handed out roughly $23 million to seven groups whose actions align with the FBI’s definition of domestic terrorism.
Add to that over $50 million to entities that reportedly endorsed Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, and you’ve got a recipe for serious concern among conservatives who value national security over unchecked activism.
The CRC also points fingers at Soros-funded groups for backing the “Stop Cop City” campaign in Atlanta, which led to over 40 prosecutions on domestic terrorism charges. It’s hard not to see why some might view this as a pattern of funding chaos rather than progress. But is this evidence of wrongdoing or just guilt by association?
Further fueling the fire, the CRC report claims left-wing groups supported by Soros helped train activists in property destruction during the 2020 riots. If accurate, this paints a troubling picture of influence peddling in the name of social change, especially for those of us who believe in peaceful protest over street-level anarchy.
Soros-funded political action committees have also backed district attorneys in liberal cities where crime rates have spiked, according to the data.
Critics argue this shows a dangerous agenda to undermine law enforcement, though supporters might counter that it’s about reforming a broken system. The truth likely lies in a messy middle, but public safety can’t be a bargaining chip.
Meanwhile, OSF leadership has shifted, with George Soros’ son, Alex Soros, taking the reins as chairman in December 2022. With Alex recently accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom on his father’s behalf from President Joe Biden, the timing of this investigation feels like a deliberate counterpunch from the Trump administration. Politics, as always, seems to be the undercurrent here.
An OSF spokesperson, speaking to the Daily Caller News Foundation, pushed back hard, calling the accusations “politically motivated attacks on civil society.” They argued these moves aim to silence dissent and threaten First Amendment rights. It’s a fair point to consider—free speech is a cornerstone, even when the speech grates on conservative nerves.
The same spokesperson added, “Our work in the United States is solely dedicated to strengthening democracy and upholding constitutional freedoms.” Noble words, but when millions allegedly flow to groups tied to violence, skeptics on the right might ask if “democracy” is just a convenient shield for a more radical agenda.
Over at the Department of Justice, a spokesperson stayed tight-lipped, telling the Daily Caller News Foundation, “We do not comment on potential litigation or investigations.”
That’s standard fare, but their added remark about pursuing “every lawful avenue” if organizations threaten American safety hints at a firm stance. It’s a reminder that justice, not politics, should drive this process—though separating the two is easier said than done.
President Trump hasn’t minced words on this, previously stating on Truth Social that Soros and his son should face RICO charges for supporting violent protests.
While his frustration with what he sees as destructive activism resonates with many on the right, such strong rhetoric risks overshadowing a legitimate debate about accountability with partisan noise.
On the flip side, OSF insists they’ve received no official communication about any investigation, per their spokesperson. If true, this leak to the press could be seen as a trial balloon—or a warning shot—before any formal action. Either way, transparency will be key to ensuring this doesn’t devolve into a political witch hunt.
