On Sunday morning, deputies from the Pender County Sheriff's Office found three men who were unresponsive, in a privately-owned car outside a convenience store. The three, were U.S. Marines, found in a car, at a Speedway gas station in North Carolina near Camp Lejeune, where all three were stationed.

Identified by the U.S. Marine Corps, all three were lance corporals. Their names were-

  • Tanner J. Kaltenberg, 19, of Madison, Wisconsin
  • Ivan R. Garcia, 23, of Naples, Florida
  • Merax C. Dockery, 23, of Pottawatomie, Oklahoma

After performing autopsies, the North Carolina Office of Medical Examiner determined the cause of the Marines' death to be carbon monoxide poisoning. The Pender County Sheriff's Office did not immediately make clear whether their deaths were accidental.

In a statement Sheriff Alan Cutler said-

"I am saddened by the timeless and tragic death of these three young men, who served our country honorably,"… "Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families and colleagues during this time."
