Southern Baptists pushing for reversal of gay marriage laws

 June 11, 2025

The Southern Baptist Convention has just dropped a bombshell at their annual meeting, demanding the Supreme Court overturn landmark rulings on gay marriage.

The Irish Star reported that during their massive two-day gathering, attended by over 10,000 church representatives, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination voted on resolutions urging a return to what they see as biblical and natural law on marriage, family, sports betting, and childbearing policies.

The meeting kicked off on a Tuesday morning with praise sessions and cheerful reports of rising baptism numbers across the U.S.

But the real fireworks came with their call to reverse decisions like Obergefell v. Hodges, which they argue defy God’s design for marriage as solely between a man and a woman.

Southern Baptists Target Key Court Rulings

A reversal of Obergefell, they insist, would effectively ban same-sex unions nationwide. It’s a bold move, rooted in their belief that laws must reflect what they view as the clear truths of creation and Scripture.

Beyond marriage, the resolution also nudges legislators to crack down on sports betting, painting it as a societal ill.

They’ve also thrown their weight behind policies that encourage childbearing, framing family growth as a moral imperative. Turns out, they’re not just preaching to the choir—they want action.

The Southern Baptists aren’t shy about their stance: laws contradicting their interpretation of nature and God’s word must go. Their resolution is a clarion call for lawmakers to prioritize a traditional view of marriage, sex, and human life. It’s a reminder that in their book, some truths aren’t up for debate.

On a separate but related front, several LGBTQ advocacy organizations, including the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the GLBT Historical Society, have launched a legal challenge against executive orders from the current administration.

These groups are suing over policies they say dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, alleging a direct attack on transgender rights.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, targets orders with titles that suggest a push against what critics call a progressive agenda. These policies, per the plaintiffs, aim to restore what the administration views as biological reality in federal frameworks.

“The government is attempting to erase a very specific group of people,” said Tyler TerMeer, CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Well, that’s quite the charge, but let’s unpack it—while the intent behind these orders may be to refocus on traditional definitions, the impact, as claimed, feels like a personal dismissal to many.

Legal Challenges Highlight Deep Divisions

TerMeer’s words sting with frustration, yet one wonders if dialogue, not just lawsuits, could bridge this chasm.

The conservative push for clarity in policy often clashes with the lived experiences of those on the other side. It’s a messy standoff, but actions, as always, have consequences.

Civil rights groups like the Legal Defence Fund and Lambda Legal are also in the fray, arguing these orders violate Fifth Amendment rights. They claim the policies deny due process by stripping away protections without clear justification.

“The orders are vague, use undefined terms, and make compliance impossible,” said Jose Abrigo, an attorney at Lambda Legal.

That’s a fair point on clarity, but one might counter that redefining long-held norms overnight often leaves everyone scrambling—perhaps intent matters as much as execution.

These executive orders, with their focus on ending what some see as wasteful DEI programs, have sparked a firestorm. Critics argue they undermine merit-based systems, while supporters might say they’re just cutting through ideological fluff. The courtroom will likely have the final word.
