Pete Hegseth confirms evidence on Pentagon leaks being handed over to DOJ for prosecution

 April 23, 2025

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is cracking down on leaks that exposed sensitive U.S. military plans, promising swift justice.

The New York Post reported that during an interview, he revealed that evidence from a Pentagon probe will soon be turned over to the Department of Justice for potential prosecutions. His resolve signals a no-nonsense approach to protecting national security.

The investigation centers on unauthorized disclosures of critical military strategies, including Panama Canal operations and war preparations against China.

Several Pentagon staffers have already been dismissed as a result of the probe’s findings. Hegseth’s leadership is under scrutiny amid these turbulent revelations. On March 15, 2025, Hegseth inadvertently shared U.S. airstrike plans targeting Houthi militants in Yemen.

The information was sent via a Signal chat that included National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg. This misstep has been referred to the Pentagon’s inspector general for a thorough investigation.

Accidental Disclosure Sparks Controversy

The Signal chat incident also involved Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer Rauchet, and his brother, Phil Hegseth, a senior Pentagon adviser. Both received details of the Houthi attack plans, including flight schedules for F/A-18 Hornets. Former national security officials noted that these strikes were part of an ongoing, classified mission.

Hegseth downplayed the incident, describing the shared information as “informal, unclassified coordinations.” He emphasized that no war plans were texted, countering accusations of mishandling sensitive data. His explanation aims to restore confidence in his stewardship of the Defense Department.

The probe’s initial findings led to the firing of key Pentagon figures, including senior adviser Dan Caldwell and deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick.

Chief of staff to the deputy defense secretary, Colin Carrol,l and top spokesman John Ullyot were also dismissed. These actions reflect Hegseth’s commitment to rooting out disloyalty.

John Ullyot faced additional criticism for his role in removing an official webpage honoring MLB trailblazer Jackie Robinson.

In a Politico op-ed, Ullyot described his time under Hegseth as a “month from hell” and hinted at more revelations. Hegseth responded, saying Ullyot was let go for clear reasons and wished him well.

Dan Caldwell, another fired staffer, denied leaking military information during an interview with Tucker Carlson on April 21, 2025. He claimed that if he had committed the alleged offenses, he would be facing serious consequences. Caldwell’s defense highlights the contentious atmosphere surrounding the probe.

On March 27, 2025, military veterans and families of active-duty troops rallied in Chicago, demanding Hegseth’s resignation. Their protest underscores growing unease with his leadership during this crisis. Yet Hegseth remains focused on advancing President Trump’s agenda.

White House Backs Hegseth

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt firmly denied reports suggesting Trump was seeking Hegseth’s replacement. On April 21, 2025, she called such claims “total FAKE NEWS” and affirmed the president’s strong support. Her statement aims to quell speculation about Hegseth’s position.

Hegseth, speaking on Fox News on April 22, 2025, vowed that leakers would face consequences. “When that evidence is gathered sufficiently,” he told Brian Kilmeade, “it will be handed over to the DOJ.” His words reflect a determination to hold accountable those undermining national security.

He also expressed frustration with the media, accusing them of peddling stories from disgruntled former employees. “I don’t have time for leakers,” Hegseth declared, emphasizing his focus on military priorities. His stance resonates with supporters who value decisive leadership.

The leaks included details of a private briefing with Elon Musk on war preparations against China, later canceled by President Trump. Axios reported that The New York Times’ coverage prompted the cancellation. These disclosures have heightened concerns about the Pentagon’s ability to safeguard classified information.

As the investigation progresses, Hegseth remains steadfast, warning that “the leakers know who they are.” He believes the truth will emerge, and those responsible will face justice. For now, his focus is on restoring trust and advancing America’s defense priorities.
