Northwestern president steps down amid federal funding freeze

 September 7, 2025

Northwestern University just dropped a bombshell that’s shaking up the academic world. WGN9 reported that Michael Schill, the university’s president since 2022, announced his resignation on Thursday, leaving behind a tenure riddled with financial woes and cultural controversies.

From federal funding freezes to campus protests over the war in Gaza, Schill’s time at the Evanston, Illinois-based institution has been a rollercoaster of crises that ultimately led to his exit.

Let’s rewind to 2022 when Schill took the helm as Northwestern’s 17th president, stepping into a role that would soon be tested by unprecedented challenges. The university, long a respected name in academia, was about to face storms that no amount of ivory tower polish could weather.

Early Scandals Rock Schill’s Tenure

By the summer of 2023, Schill was already knee-deep in controversy with an athletics hazing scandal that tarnished the university’s reputation.

Hazing allegations surfaced in the football program, leading to the suspension of longtime head coach Pat Fitzgerald for two weeks—only for Schill to fire him just three days later. Similar accusations hit the women’s volleyball and baseball programs, resulting in the dismissal of both head coaches that same year.

Fast forward to August 2025, and Fitzgerald settled a lawsuit against Northwestern for an undisclosed sum, closing a messy chapter but not erasing the stain on Schill’s leadership.

It’s hard not to wonder if these early missteps set the tone for the chaos to come. After all, when student-athletes are caught in such scandals, shouldn’t the administration take a harder look in the mirror?

But the hazing mess was just the appetizer. In 2024, Northwestern found itself in the national spotlight as pro-Palestinian protests over the war in Gaza erupted on campus, sparking accusations of civil rights violations.

Schill, caught in the crosshairs, was even hauled before a Congressional hearing to answer for claims that the university failed to adequately address antisemitism.

Those 2024 protests weren’t just loud—they were costly. Earlier in 2025, the federal government slapped Northwestern with a funding freeze of roughly $790 million, citing alleged civil rights violations tied to the campus unrest. For a university already struggling, this was like pulling the plug on life support.

In response, Northwestern declared it would self-fund research projects to keep the lights on, but the financial strain was undeniable.

By the summer of 2025, the university announced layoffs of 425 positions, a gut punch to staff and a clear sign that the budget was bleeding. If this isn’t a wake-up call about the consequences of mismanaging campus culture, what is?

Schill himself seemed to acknowledge the weight of these challenges in his resignation statement. “Over the past three years, it has been my profound honor to serve as president of Northwestern University,” he said, reflecting on his tenure.

Schill Reflects on a Rocky Road

“In that time, our community has made significant progress while simultaneously facing extraordinary challenges,” Schill continued. Progress? One has to squint pretty hard to see it amidst the layoffs, lawsuits, and lost funding.

Schill also noted, “As I reflect on the progress we have made and what lies ahead, I believe now is the right time for new leadership to guide Northwestern into its next chapter.”

Well, that’s one way to bow out gracefully while the ship is taking on water. But let’s be real—when a leader steps down in the middle of a storm, it’s rarely just about “timing.”

Now, with Schill staying on until an interim president is named by the Board of Trustees, the university is at a crossroads. The progressive agenda on campuses often fuels these kinds of cultural clashes, and Northwestern’s saga is a textbook case of how prioritizing ideology over pragmatism can backfire.

Still, one can’t help but sympathize with Schill for inheriting a role during such turbulent times.
