New "Signalgate" story attacking Pete Hegseth debunked for relying on anonymous sources

 April 22, 2025

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faces relentless media scrutiny, yet his leadership remains steadfast. The New York Times and Politico recently unleashed articles painting his tenure as chaotic, zeroing in on the so-called "Signalgate" controversy and alleged internal Pentagon turmoil. These claims, however, often rely on anonymous sources and exaggerated narratives.

The Federalist reported that last Sunday, both outlets published pieces targeting Hegseth’s management of the Defense Department. The Times revisited a month-old incident dubbed "Signalgate," where Hegseth allegedly shared sensitive military details in a Signal app group chat.

Politico’s op-ed, penned by former Pentagon spokesman John Ullyot, escalated the criticism, labeling the department’s state as chaotic. The "Signalgate" story centers on a group chat that included Hegseth’s wife, brother, personal lawyer, and defense leaders.

According to anonymous allegations, Hegseth shared operational details about a planned military strike on Yemen’s Houthis. The chat also mistakenly included a news media member, added by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.

Signalgate Sparks Media Frenzy

Ullyot, who resigned the week before his op-ed, called the Pentagon’s situation a “full-blown meltdown.” He criticized Hegseth’s response to "Signalgate," claiming the secretary issued a vague denial. Hegseth reportedly said, “Nobody was texting war plans,” which Ullyot dismissed as inadequate.

The Times article emphasized the inclusion of non-military figures in the chat, suggesting it compromised security. Yet, the specifics of what was shared remain murky, with no concrete evidence of harm. The narrative seems designed to inflame rather than inform.

Ullyot’s op-ed went further, describing March as “The Month from Hell” for the Pentagon. He alleged a “near collapse” among top ranks, pointing to personnel changes as evidence of dysfunction. These claims, however, lack context about the necessity of such moves.

Ullyot accused Hegseth of orchestrating a “strange and baffling purge” of Pentagon staff. Some employees were let go, but the reasons varied, and the term “purge” implies malice without proof. Personnel transitions are routine in any administration, especially under new leadership.

Another point Ullyot raised was Hegseth’s wife attending sensitive meetings. He downplayed this as unimportant, yet the media amplified it to question Hegseth’s judgment. Such selective outrage ignores the broader context of her involvement.

Ullyot also referenced a supposed high-level briefing on China involving Elon Musk. The White House disputes this, and the briefing never occurred. This non-event was used to pad the narrative of disorder.

Hegseth’s Leadership Under Fire

The media’s focus on “Signalgate” and personnel changes paints a skewed picture. Hegseth’s tenure has prioritized bold reforms, which inevitably ruffle feathers. Critics like Ullyot seem eager to exploit these adjustments to undermine a strong conservative leader.

The Signal chat incident, while imperfect, does not equate to reckless endangerment. Mistakes happen, and the inclusion of a media member was Waltz’s error, not Hegseth’s. The secretary’s response aimed to clarify without fueling speculation.

Ullyot’s dramatic language, like “total chaos,” serves more to sensationalize than to substantiate. His resignation suggests personal grievances may color his critique. The Pentagon’s operations continue despite these media-driven storms.

The New York Times and Politico articles lean heavily on anonymous allegations and hyperbole. Their portrayal of Hegseth as a reckless leader ignores his commitment to national security. The “meltdown” narrative crumbles under scrutiny.

Calls for Hegseth’s dismissal, as Ullyot hinted, reflect a broader agenda to destabilize conservative leadership. The Pentagon’s challenges are real but not catastrophic. Hegseth’s focus on streamlining and accountability deserves support, not sabotage.
