Mike Pence Opposes Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Health Secretary Nomination

 January 16, 2025

At the heart of the political debate, former Vice President Mike Pence is taking a firm stand against Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s appointment as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The National Pulse reported that Pence's opposition centers on Kennedy's previous support for abortion rights, sparking intense discussions among Republican senators.

Mike Pence, leading the charge through his advocacy group, Advancing American Freedom, has voiced significant concerns over Kennedy's nomination.

The group's contention lies primarily with Kennedy's approach to abortion, particularly his endorsement of late-term abortion rights.

Pence's Advocacy Group Raises Concerns

Advancing American Freedom, guided by Pence, has explicitly targeted Kennedy's abortion stance, which reportedly includes permitting women to choose to terminate pregnancies at any stage.

This position sharply contrasts with the conservative pro-life views endorsed by Pence and many Republicans. A letter sent to Republican senators by Pence's group includes pointed inquiries about Kennedy's views on this contentious issue.

The letter details five critical questions aimed at scrutinizing Kennedy's commitment to pro-life policies, urging senators to evaluate his alignment with conservative values. This proactive stance underscores the group's strategy to influence the confirmation process significantly.

In contrast to the concerns raised by Pence’s group, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri has brought a different perspective to the fore.

After a conversation with Kennedy in December, Hawley disclosed Kennedy’s assurances about his commitment to reinstating pro-life policies implemented during the Trump administration, including pivotal ones like the Mexico City Policy, which prevent U.S. aid from funding non-governmental organizations that perform or promote abortions overseas.

Despite this communication, the leaders of Advancing American Freedom, Tim Chapman and Marc Short, maintain a stance of skepticism. They argue that Kennedy’s past positions and statements offer little assurance that he will adhere firmly to pro-life directives at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Kennedy's Commitment to Pro-Life Policies Questioned

Chapman and Short emphasized the divergence between Kennedy's history on abortion and the policies of the Trump administration, which they consider to have a robust pro-life record.

"While RFK Jr. has made certain overtures to pro-life leaders that he would be mindful of their concerns at HHS, there is little reason for confidence at this time," they stated.

Moreover, during his tenure, Pence coordinated the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic as part of Operation Warp Speed, collaborating with key figures including Alex Azar, Anthony Fauci, and Deborah Birx. This engagement further deepens the layers of political and policy-based conflicts surrounding the current debate on Kennedy’s nomination.

As discussions unfold, Kennedy has promised to scrutinize actions taken by key pandemic response coordinators, namely Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx, potentially shaping his approach to handling similar crises if confirmed.

The forthcoming confirmation proceedings will be a crucial battleground for showcasing the ideological divides within U.S. healthcare policy. Advocates from various spectrums are preparing to voice their positions, reflecting the broader national debate over abortion, a pivotal issue that has persistently stirred political controversies.
