Judge Stephen Yekel Ends Life In Georgia Courtroom On Final Work Day

 January 2, 2025

In a heartrending event inside the Effingham County State Court, Judge Stephen Yekel, a respected figure in the Georgia legal community, tragically took his own life. This occurred on what was intended to be his last day serving as a judge, following an unsuccessful attempt to secure re-election.

The Daily Mail reported that Stephen Yekel, a longtime public servant, died by suicide in his courtroom just as he was to exit his judicial role.

Judge Yekel's body was discovered on a Tuesday morning within the confines of the courtroom where he had presided. It is believed that the incident took place late on Monday night or early in the following morning, marking a somber end to his judicial tenure.

The Effingham County Sheriff, Jimmy McDuffie, confirmed the time and place of discovery, stating, "Yekel was discovered around 10am, but it appeared he had shot himself late Monday night or early Tuesday." The exact circumstances leading up to the event are under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Long Career as a Lawyer and Judge

Prior to his time on the bench, Yekel enjoyed a lengthy career in law enforcement and legal practice. He served as a special agent and investigator which paved the way for his later roles in public service, including being an assistant district attorney.

His appointment to the state court bench came in 2022, bringing a wealth of experience to his role as a judge. However, his time in this position was cut short after a challenging re-election campaign that concluded with his defeat.

Following this electoral loss, Governor Brian Kemp intervened to prevent Yekel's resignation, which the judge had submitted in disappointment over the low turnout at the polls. Yekel's letter, expressing his disillusionment, was formally rejected by the Governor.

Outside of his professional life, Judge Yekel was deeply involved in his community, notably in little league baseball, where he was a coach. His engagement with the local community was well recognized and appreciated by those around him.

Professionally, Judge Yekel faced challenges, including a lawsuit brought by a former court employee. The lawsuit, which claimed wrongful termination, sought damages of $10,000 and added to the pressures the judge was experiencing amid his electoral and personal disappointments.

Despite these challenges, colleagues and community members remember Judge Yekel for his dedication to law and justice. The courtroom, closed temporarily after the tragic event, was slated to resume its operations soon thereafter, continuing the legal processes that Yekel had overseen.

Responses to the Tragic Event

The local community and its leaders expressed their shock and sorrow over Judge Yekel's untimely death.

The Effingham County Board of Commissioners released a statement, saying, "The Effingham County Board of Commissioners and staff are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Judge Steve Yekel at the Effingham County Courthouse today and we offer our condolences to his family and loved ones."

From the state's executive, a representative of Governor Kemp’s office conveyed their regards, "While we are unable to provide comment on an open investigation, Judge Yekel’s family and loved ones are in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

The incident has cast a shadow over the community, as they mourn the loss of a figure who played a pivotal role in their legal and civic life.

As investigations continue, many hope for answers that may shed light on the reasons behind Judge Yekel's tragic decision, mapping a path to prevention in the future.
