Jenniffer González Upsets Gov. Pedro Pierluisi in Puerto Rico Primary

 June 3, 2024

In a surprising turn of events, Puerto Rico’s congressional representative Jenniffer González clinched a primary election victory against Governor Pedro Pierluisi, reshaping the future outlook of their pro-statehood party, the New Progressive Party.

AP News reported that Jenniffer González's victory over incumbent Governor Pedro Pierluisi in the primary marks a historic shift in Puerto Rican politics.

The primary election, which took place on a Sunday, ended with a resounding win for González, who secured 56% of the votes compared to Pierluisi's 44%. This victory is significant as it saw González, a Republican and a former ally of Pierluisi, a Democrat, go head-to-gone against her previous running mate.

Four years ago, González and Pierluisi ran together under the New Progressive Party banner, both advocating for Puerto Rico’s statehood. However, their paths diverged as González aimed for a greater role, challenging Pierluisi for the gubernatorial position.

Electoral Challenges Highlight the Voting Day

The electoral process was fraught with difficulty. Power outages affected more than a dozen voting centers, heavily impacting voter participation.

The election commission responded by renting generators and identifying alternative voting sites to mitigate these disruptions.

Beyond the logistical challenges, the weather also played a spoiling role. Heavy rainfall further complicated matters for voters, underscoring the urgency of the infrastructure issues highlighted by the candidates during the campaign.

Puerto Rico, still grappling with the consequences of financial bankruptcy and a massive public debt exceeding $9 billion by its power company, found the voting process testing its resilience.

Following the unexpected outcome, Governor Pierluisi expressed his defeat as "very painful" and unanticipated. Despite this, he vowed to continue his duties with vigor until his term concludes. “What happened is very painful, and I didn’t expect it, but let no one think that I’m going to slow down in the remainder of these four years,” Pierluisi stated, reflecting his commitment to continue his governance.

On the other side, Jenniffer González echoed a populist tone in her victory speech, emphasizing that leadership roles should serve the populace. “Positions do not belong to politicians; they belong to the people,” González declared, signaling her intent to address the everyday issues affecting residents, notably the unreliable power supply.

The victory makes González the first female gubernatorial candidate to secure a primary win for the New Progressive Party, setting a precedent and possibly influencing the role women play in Puerto Rican politics.

In her running for the November general elections, she will be joined by senior U.S. naval military officer Elmer Román seeking the position of resident commissioner.

Meanwhile, the competition for resident commissioner saw Puerto Rico Senator William Villafañe, backed by Pierluisi, securing 53% of the votes. His opponent, Román, garnered 47% with 80% of voting centers reporting, leaving the outcome somewhat in suspense until all votes are counted.

Technical Difficulties and Election Integrity Concerns

Compounding the electoral drama, the website for Puerto Rico’s election commission crashed on election night, causing delays and confusion about the results.

Jessika Padilla, the alternate president of the elections commission, candidly addressed the technology failure, acknowledging the possibility of federal involvement. “If it were necessary to activate the FBI given the situation, we will do it,” Padilla assured. This statement underscores the serious approach taken to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

The primary outcomes for other parties also highlighted shifts in political landscapes. Jesús Manuel Ortiz of the opposing party that supports Puerto Rico's territorial status ousted incumbent Sen. Juan Zaragoza. Ortiz received a commanding 62% of the vote, indicative of the public’s desire for change on multiple fronts.

As Puerto Rico progresses toward the November elections, voters are left pondering the implications of this primary. Pablo José Hernández will contend unopposed as the Popular Democratic Party’s candidate for resident commissioner, adding another layer to the electoral narrative.

In conclusion, this election not only underscored the challenges Puerto Rico faces in terms of infrastructure and electoral management but also set the stage for significant political shifts. From the historic win by a female candidate to the sensitivities around voting logistics, constituents are keenly eyeing the future, hopeful for leadership that can proficiently address both their immediate and long-term concerns.
