JD Vance vindicated as European nations cut back on mass immigration

 May 19, 2025

Europe’s open borders are slamming shut. Vice President JD Vance’s warnings about mass immigration’s toll on Western values are ringing true as leaders from London to Sacramento scramble to tighten policies. It’s a sharp pivot, and the public’s fed up.

Just The News reported that from the UK to California, leaders are reversing lax immigration stances amid rising cultural tensions and political backlash. Vance’s February 2025 speech called out Europe’s permissive policies, and now, even progressive darlings like Keir Starmer are singing a different tune.

In his speech, Vance argued that mass immigration weakened Europe’s core values and strained its U.S. alliance.

He pointed to censored critics and Romania’s canceled elections as proof of democratic fragility. The man wasn’t whispering in the wind—Europe’s listening now.

Starmer’s Immigration U-Turn

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, once a champion of open borders, unveiled a tough new immigration crackdown.

His plan demands English proficiency, penalizes firms hiring abroad, and slashes migration numbers. “Settlement in the UK is a privilege,” Starmer declared, sounding more like a populist than a Labour loyalist.

Starmer’s policies aim to halt Channel boat crossings and end asylum hotels. He boasts of returning 24,000 people without legal status. That’s a far cry from Labour’s old playbook—turns out, voters don’t love being an “island of strangers.”

Public fury over crime and cultural clashes fueled the UK’s Reform Party, led by Nigel Farage, to overtake Labour and Conservatives in polls. Local elections showed Reform’s gains, with The Telegraph warning of Labour’s potential “extinction.” Starmer’s pivot might be too little, too late.

Starmer’s past as the Crown Prosecution Service head haunts him. In Rotherham, he faced criticism for mishandling Muslim grooming gangs and child trafficking cases, where authorities ignored victims to avoid “community tensions.” Progressive dogma, it seems, trumped justice.

Rotherham’s local leaders dismissed desperate parents, while pro-immigration groups smeared critics as racists.

The scandal underscores the cultural friction Vance warned about. Sweeping it under the rug didn’t make it disappear.

A Pew Research Center study found 57% of people link high immigration to rising crime. Voters aren’t buying the “diversity is strength” mantra anymore. They want borders, not platitudes.

Romania’s Election Chaos

In Romania, independent Călin Georgescu’s anti-immigration, pro-Russian platform won the 2024 presidential election’s first round. Courts nullified the vote, citing Russian interference, sparking “legal chaos,” per The Guardian. Vance’s quip about fragile democracies hits hard here.

“If your democracy can be destroyed with a few $100,000 of digital advertising,” Vance said, “it wasn’t very strong.” Romania’s new elections, set for May 25, 2025, see conservative George Simion, backed by Georgescu, leading. Expect tighter borders if he wins.

Simion promises Georgescu a key role, possibly prime minister. Romania’s shift echoes Europe’s broader retreat from open-door policies. The pendulum’s swinging, and it’s not subtle.

Across the Atlantic, California Governor Gavin Newsom hit pause on healthcare for low-income unauthorized migrants. Citing costs and tariff losses, he’ll charge a $100 monthly premium starting in 2027. “Fiscal stability” is Newsom’s excuse, but voters smell political survival.

Newsom’s also scaling back taxpayer-funded perks for unauthorized migrants. President-elect Donald Trump’s border crackdown victory over Kamala Harris set the tone. California’s golden dreams don’t include footing everyone’s bill anymore.
