In an ambitious move spearheaded by Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL), allies of President Donald Trump in the House are pushing for the legislative cementing of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Fox News reported that the proposed bill seeks to formalize and empower DOGE, initiated by Trump and managed by Elon Musk, to implement federal budget cuts and efficiency strategies.
The initiative for creating DOGE originated from an executive order by Trump aiming to streamline operations across federal departments.
The core objective of the department is to enhance government operations and reduce unnecessary spending.
Elon Musk, a notable figure in technology and innovation, has been appointed to lead DOGE, working alongside Acting Administrator Amy Gleason. Their responsibilities include the supervision and implementation of strategic efficiency measures.
Since its inception, DOGE has faced several legal challenges. These challenges have sparked protests, particularly after directives that led to employees being instructed not to report to their jobs. This has resulted in public rallies outside major government facilities, demonstrating the controversial nature of the efficiency measures.
To counteract these challenges, the bill introduced by Mills and co-sponsored by figures including Rep. Aaron Bean, R-Fla., seeks to grant DOGE legal protections. This would shield the department's actions from litigation and solidify its capability to make administrative decisions.
Support for the bill extends beyond Mills and Bean, with additional backing from Reps. Byron Donalds, R-Fla.; Barry Moore, R-Ala.; and Michael Rulli, R-Ohio. These representatives form a core group advocating for DOGE’s formal establishment in the legislative framework.
One of the significant actions undertaken by DOGE under Musk’s leadership includes the cancellation of 200,000 federal government credit cards, a move aimed at curbing unnecessary government expenses and fraud.
Rep. Cory Mills emphasized the innovative aspects of DOGE's operations, particularly the development of algorithms by Elon Musk. These algorithms continuously analyze government programs for any discrepancies or inefficiencies.
"What Elon has done is that he's created kind of this algorithm that works in the background, that sifts through all of these different programs, 24 hours a day, to look at anomalies and how they're being utilized, to go ahead and say, ‘Hey, is this something for analysis? Is this something that we need to take a look at?’ That's really what this is — it's about modernizing and maximizing," explained Mills.
This legislation also seeks to implement a structured reporting system for DOGE’s activities directly to Congress. This structure is crucial for maintaining transparency and accountability in how taxpayer funds are employed to streamline government operations.
"This creates a reporting structure that allows what DOGE is doing with the Cabinet to be relayed to Congress, which is our Article I authorities, which is the idea of being good stewards of taxpayer funding," Mills stated, highlighting the importance of oversight.
As the bill progresses, both proponents and critics closely monitor its implications for the efficiency and transparency of government operations.
DOGE's future under this legislative action could set a precedent for how similar initiatives are handled in U.S. governance.
As developments unfold, the legislative journey of this bill will be a key storyline to watch, influencing not only the future of DOGE but also the broader narrative around efficiency and reform in federal operations.
