Is Trump’s Truth Social the new Twitter? That is the question on many people’s minds after President Trump announced he would not be rejoining Twitter, but instead use his own social media platform- Truth Social. Trump created Truth Social, which launched earlier this year as a free and open-source distributed social network.
Trump Media & Technology Group, founded in October 2021, created Truth Social, after Trump was banned from Facebook and Twitter. Trump had been silent on his platform since its initial launch but that changed this week when Trump made a ‘Truth’ post:
The hashtag #COVFEFE referred to an apparent typo that Trump had once Tweeted.
So will Trump’s Truth Social be the new Twitter? The app style and format is very similar, users are able to make posts “Truths”, which are similar to tweets and share other users’ posts “ReTruths”, (ie. retweets.) Its very much clone like in its structure.
The most apparent difference is the lack of censorship. Truth Social proclaims itself as a “big tent” platform without political censorship, allowing for “free expression”. But its users still must abide by the rules users agreed to when they accept the app’s terms of service.
“You also aren’t allowed to impersonate other users or use any information obtained from the app to “harass, abuse or harm another person.” In some cases, Truth Social’s rules are more strict than Twitter’s. For example, Twitter allows users to post pornography if the content is marked as sensitive, but Truth Social says sexual content or language isn’t allowed.
User-generated content also can’t be false, inaccurate or misleading or include threats of violence, according to Truth Social’s terms of service. Apps such as Facebook and Twitter have similar rules.”cnet.com
How much different the two social platforms will be, now that Elon Musk has purchased Twitter, we will have to just wait and see.
