In a significant legislative session this week, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp sanctioned several bills focusing on public safety and legal reforms.
Breitbart reported that these laws included acts against illegal immigration, requirements for law enforcement positions, and enhanced penalties for crimes like drag racing and swatting. On Wednesday, Governor Kemp signed multiple bills that promise to shape the future of law enforcement and public safety across the state.
Among the most prominent is the Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act, also known as House Bill 1105. This particular act mandates that police and sheriff's departments should identify and detain illegal aliens involved in criminal activities to facilitate their deportation by federal authorities.
The legislation was largely fueled by a tragic incident involving Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at the University of Georgia who was murdered by Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan national. This case has significantly influenced public opinion and political responses concerning illegal immigrants committing crimes within state borders.
Alongside House Bill 1105, several other laws were enacted to fortify law enforcement capabilities and ensure public safety. Senate Bill 37 now requires anyone applying for sheriff or jailer positions in Georgia to be certified as a peace officer, aiming to professionalize these roles further.
Another critical piece of legislation, Senate Bill 63, introduces the requirement of cash bail for an additional thirty crimes, expanding the scope of this pre-trial measure to ensure that accused individuals appear in court. These changes come as part of a broader strategy to keep the community safe and ensure justice is served efficiently.
Governor Kemp also signed Senate Bill 159 and House Bill 1193, which increased penalties for anyone found providing contraband to inmates and mandated specific vehicles to have amber flashing or revolving lights, enhancing the visibility and safety of operational units within correctional facilities.
House Bill 451, known as the Ashley Wilson Act, marks a significant advance in supporting first responders. This new law mandates insurance coverage for first responders like Gwinnett County Police Officer Ashley Wilson, who suffer from job-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Officer Wilson, who pushed for this bill, suffers from PTSD following the tragic line-of-duty death of her partner in 2018.
The legislative sweep didn't end there. Senate Bill 421 also came into effect, imposing harsher penalties for false reports of emergencies such as shootings and bomb threats—a practice commonly referred to as swatting. This law aims to deter the dangerous misuse of emergency services and reduce the risk to both the public and responders.
Additionally, Governor Kemp enforced laws combating urban nuisances like illegal drag racing through Senate Bill 10 and offered financial relief to peace officers by assisting with their student loans through House Bill 130.
In his public address, Governor Kemp emphasized the necessity of the legislation concerning illegal immigration. He remarked, "People who thought sanctuary cities were a good idea, they are not... We support legal immigration, but when you have people coming in here illegally, committing crimes, especially killing someone, we are not going to stand for that."
Reiterating the governor's sentiment, State Senator John Albers clarified, “This is about criminals that are found to be illegal aliens. We don’t have folks come up afterward and say this is about immigration. This is about something else."
