Gene Hackman body camera footage released showing police discovery of deceased Hollywood actor and wife

The quiet residence of renowned actor Gene Hackman in Santa Fe, New Mexico, became the scene of a tragic and mysterious discovery last month.

All members of the Hackman household, including his wife, their dog, and Hackman himself, were found deceased under circumstances that hinted at no foul play.

On February 26, authorities were called to the Hackman residence, valued at $3.3 million, where they discovered the partially mummified remains of Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog Zinna.

The Daily Mail reported that the body camera footage of that day was released showing the police and family members discussing the situation. The bodies were found in separate rooms, adding a layer of complexity to the tragic scene that initially led police to label the deaths as suspicious.

Understanding the Unusual Deaths at Hackman’s Mansion

Upon the discovery, the scene was notable for its lack of disarray or signs of forced entry, suggesting the deaths were not the result of external intrusion. Nearby a fallen fan and scattered prescription pills were found around Arakawa, indicating she might have succumbed to a fall.

The autopsies brought some clarity, although the reasons behind the timing of the deaths remained perplexing.

Arakawa passed away on February 11 due to the Hantavirus, a rare but serious disease spread by infected rodents. One week later, on February 18, Hackman died as a result of complications from heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Their dog Zinna died from dehydration, following a visit to the vet.

Gene Hackman, who was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's, was heavily dependent on Arakawa for care, highlighting her pivotal role in his daily life and well-being. The deprivation of her care had ramifications for Hackman, who succumbed shortly after her death.

Disturbingly, the dog’s death pointed to a breakdown in the household following Arakawa's passing, likely due to its inability to fend for itself or be cared for, leading to a sad conclusion of death by dehydration.

Body camera footage taken during the investigation into the deaths revealed poignant requests made by Elizabeth Hackman, a relative. Captured in the footage, she discussed the final arrangements for their beloved dog Zinna, emphasizing the emotional weight the pet held in the family.

Family Requests Captured on Police Bodycam

"I'm thinking cremate the dog and bury it with Betsy. If the dog was wearing a collar, could you save that for me?" Elizabeth Hackman expressed this to the investigating officers. This request highlighted the family’s desire to keep their loved ones, human and pet alike, together even in death.

During the house check, a staff member indicated to the officers the gravity of the situation by stating, "They're never supposed to be out and so at that point I knew something was wrong," emphasizing the unusual circumstances that led to the discovery of the deaths.

The conversations and findings at the scene offered a glimpse into the normally private life of one of Hollywood’s revered actors. An officer, acknowledging the high-profile nature of the case, noted, "You know whose house this is?” with a colleague responding, "I do, it's Gene Hackman's."

The tragedy has indeed closed a chapter in the life of an acclaimed actor and his family. The community and fans worldwide have been touched by the story, not just because of Hackman's celebrity status but also because of the human elements of care, dependency, and profound loss that transcended his public identity.

Surviving pets Bear and Nikita, also belonging to Hackman, have been rehomed, providing a small but significant solace that life continues in the wake of tragedy. Their well-being contributes to preserving the remnants of the Hackman legacy.
