Florida judge halts Miami land deal for Trump library

 October 15, 2025

A Florida judge just slammed the brakes on a prime piece of Miami real estate set aside for President Donald Trump’s future presidential library.

The Washington Examiner reported that a temporary injunction has stopped the transfer of 2.63 acres of valuable downtown Miami land to the state, following a legal challenge over how the decision was made.

Let’s rewind to September 23, 2025, when the Miami Dade College Board of Trustees voted to hand over this $67 million-plus parcel to the state of Florida.

It’s no small plot, sitting right next to the iconic Freedom Tower, and the plan was to earmark it for a library honoring Trump. But the board’s meeting notice was vague, merely mentioning “potential real estate transactions” without spilling the beans on the specifics.

Judge Steps Into Transparency Dispute

Enter Marvin Dunn, a local historian and activist, who wasn’t buying the board’s hush-hush approach. He filed a lawsuit last week, arguing that the lack of clear public notice violated Florida’s Government in the Sunshine Act, which demands transparency in such dealings.

Dunn’s legal team pointed out that the meeting wasn’t even livestreamed, a departure from the board’s usual practice this year. If you’re going to discuss giving away land worth tens of millions, shouldn’t the public get a front-row seat, or at least a decent heads-up?

On the same day as the board’s vote, Gov. Ron DeSantis publicly announced plans for Trump’s library, and within a week, he and his Cabinet approved the transfer to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation. Talk about moving fast—perhaps a bit too fast for proper scrutiny.

Fast forward to Monday, and a courtroom drama unfolded as Judge Mavel Ruiz initially hesitated to block the deal over a technicality about Dunn’s standing to sue. Paperwork delays due to a holiday didn’t help Dunn’s case that day. But the very next day, the judge changed course with a preliminary injunction.

“The court does not believe that the notice was reasonable,” Judge Ruiz declared after the hearing on October 14, 2025. With all due respect to the court, if a notice doesn’t tell taxpayers what’s at stake, how can it pass the smell test of fairness?

“The people have a right to know what they’re going to decide to do when the transaction is so significant, so unusual, and deprives the students and the college of this land,” argued Dunn’s attorney.

Fair point—why should a college lose prime property without a crystal-clear public debate? It’s not just about politics; it’s about principle.

Balancing Act Between Law and Politics

Judge Ruiz was quick to clarify, “The case is not rooted in politics.” Still, one can’t help but wonder if the lightning rod that is Trump’s name amplifies every move. The college’s attorney even suggested Dunn’s motives might lean political, though evidence of that remains thin.

From a conservative angle, it’s frustrating to see a project honoring a leader who reshaped American politics get bogged down in procedural red tape. Yet, transparency isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a cornerstone of trust in governance, and even Trump supporters should demand it from local boards.

Looking at the bigger picture, this land deal isn’t just about a library; it’s about how decisions impacting public assets are made. If the board’s notice was as clear as mud, then Dunn’s challenge, while inconvenient for the project, raises a valid concern about accountability.

As for the library itself, there’s no firm timeline for construction or opening, though a more detailed plan is expected within the next four years. The National Archives and Records Administration will also launch a dedicated website for the project on January 20, 2029, marking the end of Trump’s second term.

For now, the injunction keeps the land in limbo, and the lawsuit could drag on as Dunn’s team pushes for a full win. It’s a reminder that even well-intentioned projects can hit snags when the process gets sidelined for expediency.
