Wednesday, the Florida Senate passed legislation to end the Walt Disney World Resort special tax and governing jurisdiction. The Senate bill S. 4-C, passed with 23 votes in favor of the bill and 16 votes against the legislation. This bill seeks to dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID), which was specially approved in 1967 to promote economic development and tourism.
According to the RCID website –
“Through the creation and effective operation of the District, Walt Disney (the corporation) was able to turn 38.5 square miles of remote and largely uninhabited pasture and swamp land into a world-class tourist destination that welcomes millions of visitors every year.”
To date Walt Disney World has enjoyed major tax benefits as well has been able to select its’ own local guiding Board of Directors allowing it to virtually govern itself. With the passage of S.4-C these decades long privileges will disappear.
Sadly, the dream that was Disney’s for his corporation, Theme Parks, Walt Disney World and the America he knew died with him. What exists is not the Walt Disney America came to trust as a safe place to bring their families.
Walt Disney World was to be a futuristic dream-world testimonial of tomorrow, that utilized as much of the modern technology as Walt hoped he could look forward to.
“The heart of Disney World was to be the “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow” (EPCOT), which he described as: an experimental prototype community of tomorrow that will take its cue from the new ideas and new technologies that are now emerging from the creative centers of American industry. It will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed, but will always be introducing and testing and demonstrating new materials and systems. And EPCOT will always be a showcase to the world for the ingenuity and imagination of American free enterprise”.-Wikipedia
However, after his death in 1966, his brother Roy had other plans for the company and family fortune preferring to build the dream park that exists today and dedicating it to his brothers’ memory. Even in death, just as today, his name is used in a way he would likely not have approved of.
Roy didn’t carry on the dream but subverted it, much like his granddaughter Abigail Disney is doing today by attacking the State that welcomed her family, made it rich and has allowed her to thrive largely self-governed for decades. She has subverted Walt’s dream, just as her grandfather Roy did before her, using her woke ideals to persecute parents who want control of their own children’s education.
For those of us Americans who remember Walt, – this is a deplorable misfortune, a real-life tragedy. Those who could do so much good now use their power against the grandparents and parents who were their first supporters.
Furthermore, Walt Disney was a patriot, loved America and hoped to preserve it for tomorrow, actively opposing the woke culture of his day:
“In 1946, he was a founding member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals, an organization who stated they “believ[ed] in, and like, the American Way of Life … we find ourselves in sharp revolt against a rising tide of Communism, Fascism and kindred beliefs, that seek by subversive means to undermine and change this way of life”.-Wikipedia
His efforts in WWII aided the sale of war bonds using Daffy Duck cartoons and he formed a training films unit to help the war effort be more effective in aircraft production and repair. As a conservative Walt it seemed cared deeply about the integrity of America.
“Shortly after the release of Dumbo in October 1941, the U.S. entered World War II. Disney formed the Walt Disney Training Films Unit within the company to produce instruction films for the military such as Four Methods of Flush Riveting and Aircraft Production Methods. Disney also met with Henry Morgenthau Jr., the Secretary of the Treasury, and agreed to produce short Donald Duck cartoons to promote war bonds…
Disney grew more politically conservative as he got older. A Democratic Party supporter until the 1940 presidential election, when he switched allegiance to the Republican Party, he became a generous donor to Thomas E. Dewey’s 1944 bid for the presidency.-Wikipedia
Again, todays Disney may bear his name, but it does not reflect the man whose love of America built the dream.
Now the people of Florida must begin to eliminate the power, that the current Disney feels it has, by exterminating their special corporate welfare exemptions. Florida Republicans moved to proposed the legislation because Disney continued to oppose DeSantis’s Parental Rights in Education Bill, now a law – pushing to incorporate “many, many, many LGBTQIA characters in its stories.” I’d say there is real woke infestation in today’s Magic Kingdom.
The Florida State House of Representatives will likely vote on the bill Thursday, which Gov. DeSantis is sure to sign.
The bill’s author Rep. Randy Fine (R) said in a statement on Tuesday… “Disney is a guest in Florida. Today, we remind them.” An excerpt from the bill reads “Notwithstanding s. 189.072(2), any independent special district established…prior to…November 5, 1968… is dissolved effective June 1, 2023,” the legislation reads.
Hopefully, this first step to level the tax playing field with other Florida corporations, will send a clear message to the woke community at today’s Disney, together with those brave souls who cut off their Disney Plus subscriptions, cancelled their vacations there and / or are spending time protesting at the gates. In Walt’s honor – consider buying what was His dream (>1966) and boycotting what Disney has become ever since.
