Democrats Release Trump’s Tax Returns Before Losing Power; Millions Paid, Millions Lost

 December 31, 2022

On Friday, six years of former President Donald Trump’s tax returns, in an unprecedented intrusion revealing nothing unusual, were released by Democrats in control of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee. This is the first time Congress had ever obtained and published the tax returns of any individual. Because Trump had resisted the release of his tax returns during the 2016 presidential election, saying that they were under audit, Democrats speculated that Trump must have been hiding something, and wondered what his returns might show.

Trump was also reluctant to give political ammunition to his rivals, knowing that the media had previously run with a story about former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, saying that he had not paid taxes for years, a claim that had no basis in fact. Each media outlet was on the lookout for anything to document, in their search for the “there” they believed to be there, and every time they came up largely empty-handed.

In fact, when MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow published a 2005 tax return of Trumps, she was widely mocked for showing that he effectively paid $38 million in income taxes. Then the New York Times claimed to have obtained “decades” of Trump’s tax returns, in 2019, revealing again nothing unusual, untoward or illegal, they claimed that he had shown “chronic losses and years of tax avoidance”. There still was essentially no “there” – there.

As Previously reported by Breitbart News-

“The Times story, if based on authentic documents, appears to debunk several conspiracy theories held by Democrats for years. The tax returns do not “any previously unreported connections to Russia,” the Times reports. Moreover, the Times story appears to confirm Trump’s claim — long treated as an excuse by Democrats — that he is under audit by the IRS. And the Times could not find “any itemized payments to Mr. Cohen,” ostensibly the subject of the New York investigation [into hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels].

So now, though there was no real legislative purpose in doing so, Democrats tried to use their majority on the House Ways and Means Committee, which essentially writes tax legislation, to force Trump to release his returns. Until finally losing at the Supreme Court, which allowed the Committee to compel the IRS to turn over Trumps tax returns, as a private citizen, he had resisted the committee’s efforts in the courts.

So, just days before Democrats formally lose their majority in the House of Representatives and, with it, majority control of the various House committees, setting an historic precedent, Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) of The House Ways and Means Committee, over saw the vote to release Trumps taxes.

Across six years of newly-released returns, covering 2015 through 2020, it revealed that Trump paid a total of $4.4 million in federal income taxes, with an adjusted gross income of -$53.2 million. According to the Wall Street Journal-

“The Trumps paid some form of federal taxes every year, but they reported income-tax liability of $750 or less in three of the six years.”

-The Wall Street Journal

However,  - though Democrats pointed to some potential problems: claiming that Trump’s tax returns as president were not properly audited by the IRS (a claim the IRS disputes), their list of charitable deductions made and questioning whether loans to Trumps’ children should have been taxed as income - again there was essentially NOTHING profoundly out of order. No bombshell revelations were to be had, and again, there was no “there” – there.

The former president said of his released returns, in a statement on Truth Social, his social media platform, that they showed –

“how proudly successful I have been” [warning that] “the Democrats should never have done it.”

Leaving an opened the door for the GOP to do the same in future, Republicans echoed the latter sentiment, saying the release of the tax returns seemed to have a purely political motive. Sadly, the Democrats have laid a precedent of forcing, for examination, the taxes of any private citizen. In doing so, they put every citizens’ right to privacy at risk, not really considering the Pandora’s box they may have opened and the harm they may have caused someone else, just because they wanted to force this effort to obtain Trumps taxes. Democrats did this because they had the votes and could – not because they should have.

Sadly, the committee was even warned prior to the vote. Kevin Brady (R-TX), the top Republican on the committee, warned about the potential consequences of the committee’s vote. In a statement before Tuesday’s vote, Brady said that-

[the] “Ways and Means Democrats are unleashing a dangerous new political weapon that reaches far beyond President Trump, and jeopardizes the privacy of every American,”….Brady added….“Going forward, partisans in Congress have nearly unlimited power to target political enemies by obtaining and making public their private tax returns to embarrass and destroy them. This is not limited to public officials, but can target private citizens, business and labor leaders, and Supreme Court justices…”adding “The precedent that we set today will have severe consequences for taxpayers in democracy,”

Trump spokesman, Steven Cheung, said it best when referring to the committee’s vote to release Trumps taxes-

“This unprecedented leak by lameduck Democrats is proof they are playing a political game they are losing. If they are so hell-bent on releasing President Trump’s tax returns—which show he built a very successful business and created numerous lucrative assets throughout his career—they should release the tax returns of Nancy Pelosi and her weirdo husband Paul to see how much dirty money they have made from selling out America and jeopardizing our national security. Alongside their insider trading and shady stock deals, Congress needs to legitimately investigate their self-enriching financial scams. If this injustice can happen to President Trump, it can happen to all Americans without cause.”
