'Squad' Democrat Cori Bush's husband indicted on serious fraud charges

 March 22, 2025

The federal government has indicted Cortney Merritts, husband to former congresswoman Cori Bush, for fraudulent activities involving COVID relief funds. Merritts is accused of illicitly securing over $20,000 from programs meant to aid small businesses during the pandemic.

Last Thursday Merritts was formally charged with defrauding the U.S. government. This charge specifically pertains to the appropriation of funds from the Small Business Administration (SBA), aimed at supporting businesses impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

The Washington Free Beacon reported that during the years 2020 and 2021, Merritts obtained substantial amounts from both the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program (EIDL).

These funds were designed to help small businesses keep their workforce employed and manage expenses during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.

Unknown to many, Merritts and Bush were secretly married in 2023, which adds a layer of personal complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings. Their marriage was disclosed amidst various legal and political turbulences surrounding them.

From Representatives to Legal Drama

The Department of Justice launched an extensive probe into the couple's financial dealings roughly a year ago, aligning with broader scrutiny of Bush's activities and public service career.

Previously, Bush represented St. Louis in Congress but her tenure was marred by controversy and ended following her defeat in a primary election last year, a loss she controversially attributed to the Jews.

Closely linked to this indictment are separate investigations concerning Bush's handling of her congressional campaign finances. Notably, her campaign disbursed over $812,000 on private security services. Intriguingly, over $150,000 of this amount went directly to Merritts.

Bush's financial management raised eyebrows even further when, after the onset of inquiries, she continued to allocate a monthly sum of $5,000 to Merritts for purported "security services." This action has invited intense scrutiny from regulators and the public alike.

Beyond the financial allegations, Bush's political actions and affiliations have also brought her under fire. A far-left figure, originally part of the "Squad"—a group including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib—Bush has consistently courted controversy.

Notably, she faced criticism for refusing to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization and was one of only two House members who voted against legislation barring Hamas terrorists from entering the U.S.

Another peculiar detail in Bush's expenditure includes payments to her close friend, Nathaniel Davis III, for security services. Davis claims to possess supernatural abilities, which raises further questions about the nature and legitimacy of the expenses logged under her campaign funds.

This complex web of allegations exposes a broader narrative of questionable ethical and financial practices, intertwining personal relationships with public duties in ways that have now attracted legal consequences for Merritts and left lingering questions about Bush's parliamentary and personal judgment.

A Broader Impact on Political Accountability

As the court proceedings gain momentum, they not only unravel the financial dealings of a formerly influential political figure but also set a precedent for how deeply personal ties influence public accountability.

The outcomes of these cases could have lasting impacts on public trust and the due diligence processes governing elected officials.

The intersection of personal life and professional responsibilities showcased in this saga underscores the intricate balance public figures must manage, highlighting the severe implications of missteps.

As the legal battles unfold, observers continue to scrutinize the interplay between Bush's political downfall and the criminal charges facing her husband, waiting to see how this will affect Bush's career trajectory and public image moving forward.
