Chicago Takes Strong Measures At DNC Amid Concerns About Radical Leftist Protests

 August 17, 2024

As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) is set to begin, Chicago is tightening security in anticipation of massive protests and possible unrest.

Breitbart reported that the city has already experienced several demonstrations and destructive events since announcing its role as the host city. Business owners and law enforcement alike are preparing extensively to ensure safety and order during the event.

With the DNC scheduled to start on Monday, the city has deployed an increased number of law enforcement personnel.

Approximately 50,000 people are expected to participate in the convention’s proceedings, prompting significant preparations to manage the crowd and potential disruptions.

Recent Violent Incidents Shape Security Strategies

Following the announcement in April 2023 that Chicago would host the DNC, the city saw riots involving large groups of teenagers, compelling a swift governmental and police response. These events underscored the challenges that might arise during large political gatherings in the city.

Given the history of the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots and the 2023 pro-Palestinian protests, the current heightened security measures come as no surprise.

Businesses throughout Chicago, remembering past damage, are not taking any chances. Owners like Scott Shapiro of Syd Jerome have decided to board up their storefronts.

"We felt it was more prudent to board up since our customers and their employers have told them to stay home throughout the convention for their safety," Shapiro explained.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling emphasized the department's commitment to maintaining order and safety.

"We plan to make sure we keep everyone within the city safe. We want this to be successful," Snelling stated. He noted that the Chicago Police Department would ensure that their focus on the neighborhoods remains steadfast, promising that resources would not be drained from any community.

Amid concerns from business owners like Shapiro who doubt the city's ability to protect commercial properties during tumultuous times, Snelling responded, "We have a city to protect." He elaborated on the strategy of deploying police presence across all neighborhoods, ensuring comprehensive coverage without neglecting any area.

Community and Leadership Response to Anticipated Protests

Local leaders, including then-Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson, have been vocal about handling the civic disturbances justly and effectively. Johnson particularly addressed the involvement of teenagers in past riots, stressing the importance of not demonizing the youth but understanding the roots of their frustrations.

The city's overall approach to the DNC illustrates a tense but hopeful anticipation. Preparations have been influenced heavily by previous protest-related disruptions.

Such preemptive actions are an attempt to mitigate risks and ensure that the convention can proceed with minimal interruptions.

As the Democratic National Convention approaches, Chicago is on high alert, deploying additional law enforcement and urging businesses to take precautionary measures against potential violence.

The expected convergence of 50,000 attendees and thousands of protesters has catalyzed a comprehensive security strategy encompassing both prevention and prepared action. From local business responses to extensive plans announced by the police, the city aims to balance hospitality with security in hosting such a significant political event.
