On Tuesday, nearly three years after Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom issued the nation’s first statewide stay-at-home order, he has ended California’s COVID-19 state of emergency officially. This official announcement will likely have no effect on the state’s nearly 40 million residents, as the governor has already lifted most of the state’s restrictions, like requiring masks, closing beaches and forcing many businesses to close.
The governor had proclaimed a state of emergency, on March 4, 2020 with only 53 confirmed cases, statewide. Newsom said in a statement at the time-

Newsom has continued to use every bit of his authority, to make sure all of California’s local governments had restrictions in place during the pandemic. He even threatened to cut funding to some cities that refused to enforce them. This in effect, massively strained California’s health care system, which has yet to fully recover.
Newsom signed a budget, last year, that would spend $200 million to assist public health departments to hire more workers. However his year, trying to cover a projected budget deficit, he’s proposing cutting nearly $50 million in public health workforce training programs.
Similar declarations of dropping COVID-19 restrictions now exist in seven states, including Illinois, Georgia, Delaware Colorado, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Texas. According to the National Academy for State Health Policy, all states except Illinois are expected to see their emergency orders rescinded next month, unless otherwise extended. This is in keeping with the fact that Biden announced last month that the federal government will end its own state of emergency on May 11 this year.
