Biden's Former Home Town Now A Key Electoral Battlefield In Pennsylvania

 October 1, 2024

In the historically Democratic Lackawanna County of northeastern Pennsylvania, a significant political shift has led to an intensely competitive upcoming election.

Fox News reported that Lackawanna County, encompassing Scranton, Carbondale, and Throop, has always leaned Democratic. The last time it supported a Republican was in 1984 when Ronald Reagan captured the imagination of its voters. However, recent trends suggest a political realignment in the making.

From 2000 to 2012, Democratic presidential nominees consistently received between 56% to 63% of the vote here.

This number dropped below the half-way mark in 2016 with Hillary Clinton securing less than 50% of the vote, indicating a shift toward Republican support.

In the 2020 elections, Joe Biden, originally from Scranton, managed to secure 53.58% of the votes in his birthplace. However, Donald Trump garnered a substantial 45.23%, reflecting a growing Republican influence.

Key Issues Driving Political Change In Lackawanna

The main concerns among the electorate include the economy, national security, and abortion rights, underscoring the diverse issues at play in this key battleground. The economic changes have been palpable, with visible improvements in Scranton, yet the general sense of America's future remains uncertain among its residents.

Local discussions have been centered around inflation, childcare, abortion rights, housing, and tax credits for small businesses and first-time home buyers.

The spotlight on these topics illustrates the conflicting opinions across the voter base.

This division is echoed in the intensifying campaign efforts from both sides as the election draws near. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have both prioritized Pennsylvania in their campaigns due to its strategic electoral importance.

David Kveragas, a local voter, expressed a sentiment that the area might outwardly appear Democratic ("blue"), but beneath the surface, it holds a "purple" tint indicative of a mixed political leaning. This perception of potential retaliation for expressing dissenting opinions is a generational issue here, David noted.

Adrianna, expressing her concerns as a minority and woman, highlighted the importance of considering the impacts of political decisions on women's rights.

"I believe nobody should tell a woman what to do with her body, especially not a man," she stated, emphasizing that abortion should be a personal decision.

John Soentgerath voiced his frustrations about economic issues affecting his daily life, like fuel prices. "The price of gas is a big issue with me," he said, recalling times when $20 was enough to fill a tank. Today's rising costs have squeezed budgets, affecting household comforts such as food and other necessities.

Trump Receives Mixed Reception Among Voters

Larry West supports Donald Trump, believing he is better suited to handle global issues like the tensions with Russia and China.

However, Michael argued that Trump's business approach might not be beneficial for the country in the long run, advocating instead for Kamala Harris's more balanced governance style.

Susanne Green, reflecting on her upbringing in a Democratic household, has felt compelled to shift her alignment due to changes within the Democratic Party, summoning the patriotic speech of President Kennedy to underscore her sentiments.

Regarding Kamala Harris, Andrew Cutillo praised her understanding of middle-class challenges, attributable to her own middle-class background, which resonates well with local sentiments. Tony Monopoli mentioned Harris's plans for tax credits and child tax benefits, which are seen as potentially significant for the local electorate.

As the election nears, Tony Monopoli observes that the campaign intensity in Pennsylvania mirrors that of other battleground states like Georgia, suggesting a national strategy that equally weighs the importance of these swing states.

With both presidential candidates pouring their efforts into Pennsylvania, the outcome of this election could significantly influence the broader national political landscape, especially with such a finely balanced voter base in Lackawanna County.
