Kristi Noem unveils 'Speedway Slammer' detention center in Indiana modeled after Florida's 'Alligator Alcatraz'

 August 6, 2025

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem just dropped a bombshell with the announcement of a new immigration detention hub in the heart of Indiana.

The Washington Examiner reported that Noem revealed the "Speedway Slammer," a facility at the Miami Correctional Facility near Bunker Hill, Indiana, adding 1,000 beds to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) capacity for housing what she calls the "worst of the worst criminal unauthorized migrants."

This new detention center emerges as the successor to Florida’s "Alligator Alcatraz," signaling a continued push for tougher immigration enforcement under the current administration’s watch.

Speedway Slammer Boosts ICE Detention Capacity

The partnership between ICE and the Indiana Department of Corrections made this expansion possible, and it’s got the backing of Gov. Mike Braun, who’s all in on the mission to tackle illegal immigration.

"We are proud to work with President Trump and Secretary Noem as they remove the worst of the worst with this innovative partnership," Braun stated in a press release.

Well, that’s a strong endorsement, though some might wonder if Indiana’s resources couldn’t be better spent on local issues rather than federal mandates.

Noem herself didn’t hold back, declaring, "COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer." That’s a catchy name, but let’s hope the focus remains on safety and fairness, not just flashy branding.

The choice of location isn’t random—Noem emphasized prioritizing spots near airport runways for swift deportations, a logistical edge that could streamline the process significantly.

"The locations we’re looking at are right by airport runways that will help give us an efficiency that we’ve never had before," Noem told CBS. Efficiency is key, but one has to ask if this focus on speed might sidestep due process for those detained.

Additional facilities are also being eyed in states like Arizona, Nebraska, and Louisiana, hinting at a broader strategy to ramp up detention space across the nation.

Record Deportations and Hiring Push

Deportation numbers are already climbing, hitting a high in July with an average of nearly 1,300 removals daily in the two weeks ending July 26, a clear sign of intensified enforcement.

Stephen Miller, a senior Trump adviser, has set an ambitious target of 3,000 daily deportations, a goal that underscores the need for more beds like those at Speedway Slammer. His X post urging folks to join ICE with a $50,000 bonus is bold, but will it attract the right talent or just opportunists?

ICE is indeed on a hiring spree, offering that hefty signing and retention bonus to bring in more immigration officers to handle the growing workload.

Congress has thrown significant weight behind these efforts, allocating roughly $170 billion for immigration enforcement, with $75 billion specifically earmarked for ICE through a federal budget bill.

This financial backing shows a clear priority on border control, though critics might argue that such funds could address the root causes of migration rather than just detention and removal. Still, for those frustrated by porous borders, this is a long-overdue step toward accountability.

As Noem pushes forward with plans like Speedway Slammer, the message is unmistakable: the administration aims to tighten the grip on unauthorized migration, one bed and one deportation at a time. Whether this approach will solve deeper systemic issues or simply stoke division remains the million-dollar question.
