John Fetterman making enemies among Democrats with independent behavior

 June 18, 2025

Senator John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, has become the latest lightning rod in a party increasingly allergic to dissent, drawing boos and sharp criticism from his own side at a recent protest.

The Daily Caller reported that at a “No Kings” protest in Philadelphia on Saturday, aimed at opposing President Donald Trump, Fetterman faced jeers from fellow Democrats and liberal activists, frustrated by his habit of breaking ranks on key issues like border security and support for Israel.

The discontent didn’t stop at heckling; one activist slammed Fetterman for skipping the event, accusing him of expecting Democrats to “roll over and play dead.”

That’s a bold charge, but it seems to miss the mark—Fetterman’s track record shows he’s anything but passive, even if his choices ruffle progressive feathers.

Fetterman’s Unapologetic Break from Party Lines

Earlier this year, on June 2, Fetterman publicly criticized his party’s approach to the U.S.-Mexico border under the previous administration, calling the unprecedented border encounters “unacceptable” and a national security concern. In a party often tiptoeing around tough immigration talk, that’s a gut punch to the progressive playbook.

He didn’t stop there—Fetterman co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act, pushing for federal detention of unauthorized migrants charged with theft-related crimes.

It’s a policy stance that aligns more with conservative priorities than the open-border rhetoric some Democrats favor, and it’s no surprise it’s earned him enemies on the left.

Then there’s his vote in March for a Republican-backed bill to fund the government for the fiscal year, another move that had party loyalists gnashing their teeth. Add to that his lone Democratic vote to confirm Attorney General Pam Bondi, and you’ve got a senator who seems to relish playing the maverick.

Fetterman’s staunch defense of Israel has also drawn ire from the more activist wing of his party, where criticism of Israeli policy often dominates. His unyielding support isn’t just talk—it’s a core conviction that puts him at odds with the progressive push for nuance or outright condemnation.

On top of that, his recent endorsement of a military parade in Washington, D.C., to mark the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary stirred fresh controversy.

He called it an “appropriate” tribute to the Army’s sacrifice and service, but some Democrats saw it as a militaristic misstep, even invoking overblown Nazi comparisons that Fetterman swiftly shot down.

“Well I think two things can be true,” Fetterman said on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” on Tuesday, addressing the backlash. “I’m not sure why Democrats would boo a fellow Democrat, but that’s their prerogative now.”

Parade Criticism and Party Tensions

He continued, “And now with the military parade, again, there was no goose stepping, and first of all let’s say stop comparing anyone, anything to the Nazis and those kinds of things, that’s crazy.” It’s a fair point—hyperbolic rhetoric cheapens real debate, and honoring soldiers shouldn’t be a partisan lightning rod.

Fetterman’s broader tensions with Democrats aren’t new; his condemnation of anti-ICE riots has long irritated those who see the agency as a symbol of oppression.

Yet, in a political landscape where border security remains a flashpoint, his willingness to call out policy failures feels like a breath of fresh air to those weary of party-line dogma.

An internal poll in the Pittsburgh area revealed that 49% of likely Democratic voters view Fetterman unfavorably, a stark sign of how deep the rift has grown. That’s a tough pill for any politician to swallow, but it underscores the cost of standing apart in today’s hyper-polarized climate.

Interestingly, Fetterman found an unlikely defender in Republican Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick, who called out Democrats for what he termed “disgraceful smears” against Fetterman’s physical and mental health in a May 9 post on X.

It’s a rare bipartisan nod, and it highlights how personal the attacks on Fetterman have become—criticism that often overshadows policy disagreements.
