Marjorie Taylor Greene turns against Trump budget bill

 June 7, 2025

Hold onto your hats, folks—Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga, once a rock-solid Trump supporter, has just thrown a wrench into the gears of the much-touted One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Fox News reported that Greene’s dramatic reversal on the bill, which she voted for just two weeks ago, comes after discovering a sneaky provision on state AI regulation, joining a chorus of House GOP allies and heavyweights like Elon Musk in opposing the legislation that aims to deliver on border security, energy production, and tax cuts.

Let’s rewind a bit to set the stage. Two weeks ago, Greene and other Trump loyalists in the House pushed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act across the finish line by a razor-thin margin of one vote.

This came after grueling overnight committee debates and last-minute huddles in House Speaker Mike Johnson’s, R-La., office.

Greene’s Shocking Reversal on AI Provision

Fast forward to now, and Greene admits she didn’t read the fine print before casting her vote.

She’s zeroed in on pages 278-279, where the bill blocks states from regulating artificial intelligence systems in interstate commerce for a full decade. Talk about a wake-up call!

“Full transparency, I did not know about this section,” Greene confessed, adding she’s “adamantly OPPOSED” to what she calls a violation of state rights. Well, turns out actions have consequences, and missing 279 pages of a bill can come back to bite.

Greene isn’t stopping at regret—she’s demanding the Senate strip this provision out entirely. She’s even threatened to vote against the bill if it returns to the House unchanged. That’s quite the line in the sand for a Trump stalwart.

She’s not alone in this rebellion, either. Other House GOP allies, including Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa, are expressing buyer’s remorse over their initial support. Perry’s expecting “MASSIVE improvements” from the Senate, as he put it, before the bill gets another House vote.

“I wish I had a nickel for every time the @freedomcaucus sounded the alarm and nobody listened,” Perry quipped. If only nickels could fix the mess of voting first and reading later.

Meanwhile, the bill itself, a brainchild of President Donald Trump, was meant to be a conservative homerun with promises of stronger borders, boosted American energy, and hefty tax cuts.

But with a Congressional Budget Office report showing it slashing taxes by $3.7 trillion while ballooning deficits by $2.4 trillion over 10 years, the fiscal hawks are squawking.

Elon Musk Adds Fuel to the Fire

Enter Elon Musk, the tech titan who recently stepped down from a special government role in the Trump administration. Musk, who also leads the Department of Government Efficiency, isn’t mincing words about the bill, calling it a “debt bomb ticking” and a squandered chance for conservative wins.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk blasted, labeling the legislation a “disgusting abomination.”

Strong words from a man who received a golden key from Trump in the Oval Office on May 30—guess even golden keys can’t unlock agreement here.

The national debt, already at a staggering $36.2 trillion as reported by the Treasury Department on June 4, is a sore spot for many Republicans. With an increase of roughly $806 million in just one day, it’s no wonder discontent over deficit spending is a driving force behind the opposition.

Despite the growing backlash, the White House isn’t budging. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted the president remains committed, saying, “This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.” Loyalty to the vision is admirable, but will it hold under this kind of pressure?

The bill now faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where Republicans have signaled they’re not on board with its current form. With GOP allies like Greene and Perry pushing back, and influential voices like Musk stirring the pot, the Senate’s revisions-or lack thereof—could make or break this legislation.
