San Diego Councilman Under Fire for Labeling ICE Agents as Terrorists

 June 2, 2025

San Diego City Councilman Sean Elo-Rivera just tossed a verbal Molotov cocktail into the already heated debate over immigration enforcement with a social media post branding ICE agents as “terrorists.”

Breitbart reported that Elo-Rivera shared a provocative image on Instagram, sparking backlash from the White House, conservative commentators, and a swarm of critical users online, while doubling down on his harsh rhetoric against federal immigration actions in his city.

The drama began Friday night when Elo-Rivera used Instagram stories to attack Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in San Diego, accusing them of targeting everyday folks in vulnerable settings.

He claimed these agents go after parents at school drop-offs, law-abiding individuals in courthouses, and workers at local eateries. Well, targeting lawbreakers isn’t exactly a picnic, but painting federal agents as villains in a neighborhood soap opera seems a tad dramatic.

Councilman’s Social Media Firestorm Ignites Debate

By Saturday, Elo-Rivera upped the ante, posting a photo of ICE agents with the word “terrorists” scrawled across it in red, paired with a Rage Against the Machine track for extra rebellious flair.

In his posts, Elo-Rivera didn’t hold back, stating, “This isn’t safety.” He added, “It’s state-sponsored terrorism,” arguing that these federal raids under the guise of public safety are anything but. Calling it “terrorism” might grab headlines, but it risks drowning out legitimate concerns about policy with pure emotional noise.

He further vented, “They’ve targeted hard-working folks in South Park,” warning that any neighborhood could be next. Hyperbole aside, it’s worth asking if local leaders should be fanning flames or fostering solutions when tensions over immigration enforcement run this high.

The White House wasn’t about to let this slide, with aide Stephen Miller taking to X to condemn Elo-Rivera’s rhetoric, asserting that true terrorism stems from left-wing extremism.

When even the administration feels compelled to weigh in, you know the councilman’s post hit a nerve. Turns out, actions—and words—have consequences.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, based in Los Angeles, amplified the story by sharing Elo-Rivera’s outburst on Saturday afternoon, ensuring it reached a broader audience.

Elo-Rivera, undeterred, defended his language, posting, “I said what I meant.” Stubbornness can be a virtue, but doubling down on such a charged term might alienate more than it inspires.

Not content to stop there, Elo-Rivera shared a screenshot from Cornell Law School’s website outlining elements of terrorism, seemingly to justify his word choice.

Meanwhile, he dismissed dozens of critical Instagram users as “fascists,” which hardly seems like the bridge-building approach a public official might want to take. Name-calling from all sides just muddles the waters of an already complex issue.

ICE Defends Operations Amid Rising Tensions

On the other side of the debate, ICE and Homeland Security authorities have framed these San Diego raids as part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to crack down on unauthorized migrants with serious criminal records, including offenses like rape and murder.

It’s a tough job, and while the optics of neighborhood sweeps can be jarring, the focus on dangerous offenders is a point often lost in the outrage.

ICE Boston head Patricia Hyde weighed in, noting that sanctuary city policies and officials like Elo-Rivera are increasingly hostile to immigration enforcement efforts. She stated, “It’s putting law enforcement lives in danger.” When cooperation breaks down, everyone’s safety—agents and communities alike—takes a hit.

Adding fuel to the fire, an ICE spokesman revealed to Fox News a staggering 413 percent spike in assaults against ICE agents. That statistic alone should give pause to anyone quick to demonize those tasked with enforcing federal law under already perilous conditions.
