Florida Democrat Under Investigation For Misusing Congressional Funds

 June 2, 2025

Well, folks, it seems even the hallowed halls of Congress aren’t immune to a good old-fashioned financial scandal.

The Daily Caller reported that Democratic Florida Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick finds herself in hot water with the House Ethics Committee over allegations of misusing a whopping $5 million from the 2023 Congressional budget, alongside other financial missteps dating back to that same year.

Cherfilus-McCormick, who’s been in Congress for just over three years, first caught the eye of the Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) with a referral filed a year ago over potential misuse of public funds. That’s when the whispers of financial impropriety began.

Allegations of Misused Millions Surface

The core of this mess? A hefty $5 million from the 2023 budget, meant for the Figgers Foundation—a Florida telemedicine non-profit—was allegedly funneled instead to a for-profit outfit. Talk about a detour that raises eyebrows!

But wait, there’s more piling onto this fiscal fiasco. The OCC report, now public thanks to the House Ethics Committee, claims her office might have made payments that violate House rules and standards of conduct. If true, that’s not just a paperwork error; it’s a breach of trust.

And the hits keep coming with additional accusations tied to her campaign finances, also dating back to 2023.

The report suggests her campaign may have accepted unreported in-kind contributions beyond legal limits and even misreported the source of certain donations. Sounds like a bookkeeping nightmare, at best.

Then there’s the eyebrow-raising claim that Cherfilus-McCormick might have doled out special favors or privileges to pals when requesting community project funding. If proven, that’s the kind of cronyism that makes taxpayers grit their teeth. Turns out, actions might indeed have consequences.

Another tidbit from the OCC report alleges her campaign could have accepted contributions made by one person under another’s name—a sneaky move if true. That’s not just bending rules; it’s the kind of sleight-of-hand that erodes public faith in our elected officials.

This isn’t even Cherfilus-McCormick’s first rodeo with ethics probes. A prior OCC referral from December 2023 pointed to potential campaign finance violations during her 2022 special election.

Now, both sets of allegations are headed to the investigative subcommittee of the House Ethics Committee for a closer look.

Ethics Committee Takes the Reins

The OCC didn’t just toss out these claims lightly—they voted on each of the five allegations, clearing them all for further review by the subcommittee. That’s a signal this isn’t mere gossip; there’s enough smoke here to warrant checking for fire.

Cherfilus-McCormick, for her part, isn’t ducking the spotlight. “The Committee on Ethics has not yet concluded its review of the allegations, and no decision has been made at this time,” she stated, adding that a referral doesn’t imply guilt.

She followed up with, “I fully respect the process and remain committed to cooperating with the Committee as it works to bring this inquiry to a close.” Admirable words, but let’s be real—cooperation is the bare minimum when millions in taxpayer dollars are on the line.

Until the subcommittee wraps up its review, Cherfilus-McCormick remains under a cloud of suspicion, fair or not. Taxpayers deserve answers, not excuses, and certainly not more of the same old political sidestepping.

If nothing else, this probe might just be a wake-up call for tighter reins on Congressional spending—something long overdue in a town too cozy with waste.
