The Kentucky Executive Branch Ethics Commission has launched a probe into GOP Senate candidate Daniel Cameron on May 14, 2025, over claims he solicited donations from a company his office was investigating.
Fox News reported that Cameron, who’s gunning to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell, called it a Democrat-led witch hunt. Back in July 2023, Cameron, then Kentucky’s attorney general and a gubernatorial hopeful, allegedly reached out to Edgewater Recovery Centers for campaign cash.
An attorney for Edgewater told the Associated Press that Cameron personally called, followed by a campaign aide pushing to organize a fundraiser. Several Edgewater executives coughed up $7,600 for Cameron’s gubernatorial bid. Sounds like a cozy arrangement, until it wasn’t.
When the calls and donations hit the headlines, Cameron’s team scrambled. A source close to Edgewater told Fox News Digital the planned fundraiser was scrapped, and the donations were promptly refunded. Damage control, activated.
Cameron’s Senate campaign insists he recused himself from the Edgewater investigation, canceled related events, and returned the funds. But the stench of impropriety lingers, and the timing couldn’t be worse.
Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear, who’s eyeing a 2028 presidential run, called for the investigation in 2023.
His administration is now steering the ethics probe in 2025, raising eyebrows about political motives. Nothing says “neutral” like a rival pushing the gavel.
Cameron didn’t mince words, telling Fox News Digital, “What’s happening to me is exactly what they did to President Trump: a shameless weaponization of government.” He’s framing this as Democrat lawfare, a playbook straight out of the MAGA handbook. The left’s predictable, isn’t it?
“This is the first major case of Democrat lawfare in the 2026 cycle, and the timing is no coincidence,” Cameron continued. He’s got a point—smack in the middle of a heated Senate race, the ethics probe feels like a well-aimed dart.
Cameron’s campaign claims he’s leading the GOP field by over 20 points. “It’s clear who the left fears most,” he told Fox News Digital. Confidence like that either signals strength or a bluff—time will tell.
The only other declared Republican in the race is Rep. Andy Barr. With McConnell’s seat up for grabs, the stakes are sky-high, and this probe could tilt the scales. Kentucky’s GOP voters aren’t known for loving drama.
Beshear’s office and the Ethics Commission stayed mum when Fox News Digital reached out. Their silence speaks volumes—either they’re cooking up a case or dodging the spotlight. Transparency’s overrated.
The allegations date back to Cameron’s time as attorney general, when his office was scrutinizing Edgewater.
Soliciting donations from a company under investigation isn’t just bad optics—it’s a potential ethics violation. Actions have consequences, Daniel.
Still, Cameron’s quick recusal and refund suggest he knew the fire was coming. The canceled fundraiser and returned $7,600 show a campaign trying to douse the flames before they spread. Too late for a clean slate, though.
This probe smells like a political hit job, timed to kneecap Cameron’s Senate run. Beshear’s involvement and the 2025 revival of a 2023 complaint scream election-year shenanigans. Kentucky deserves better than weaponized ethics probes.
