An Alabama family's journey of grief was shattered by violence when Jacob Couch fell victim to an unprovoked hatchet attack in Tucson, Arizona.

1819 News reported that Couch was attacked with a hatchet at a bus stop in Tucson, Arizona, placing him in critical condition at a local hospital.

Jacob, along with his wife Kristen, was returning to their home in Arab, Alabama, from Los Angeles, where they had been dealing with the heartbreaking loss of their stillborn son. Their travels took an unexpected and tragic turn during a layover in Tucson.

Disturbing Attack Captured on Surveillance Video

While at a Tucson bus stop, Jacob bent down to pick up an item when he was suddenly attacked. The assailant, identified as 25-year-old Daniel Michael, delivered a severe hatchet blow. The moments leading up to the attack involved a brief exchange of words, all captured by nearby surveillance equipment. After the attack, the footage shockingly shows Michael walking away casually.

Local authorities were prompt in their response, and Daniel Michael was apprehended. He faces two counts of aggravated assault, with potential homicide charges in the works, particularly given Jacob's precarious health condition. Michael's bond has been set at an imposing $1 million.

Investigators recovered the hatchet used in the grievous assault three days following the incident. This critical piece of evidence was near the scene of the crime.

Amidst this turmoil, the Couch family has seen a wave of community support. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Jacob's sister-in-law has raised over $42,000. These funds are intended to cover the family's travel and accommodation costs in Arizona and will potentially help with funeral expenses if the worst comes to pass.

Daniel Michael initially claimed he was intoxicated during the attack and professed a lack of memory regarding the incident. However, he later admitted his guilt concerning the violent assault, adding a layer of complexity to his defense.

The severity of Jacob's injuries has left him fighting for his life in the trauma ICU of Banner University Medical Center. His condition is listed as critical, and the prognosis remains uncertain.

Family and Community in Shock

Kristen Couch, witnessing the brutal attack on her husband, expressed her devastation. "Seeing your husband get almost decapitated and being the only one to help, like it's hard," she recounted, voicing the terror of that moment.

The victim's sister-in-law also spoke about the distressing situation, saying, "My brother-in-law is in critical condition in the trauma ICU ward at Banner University Medical Center, in Tucson. He and my sister were on the way home, back to Alabama, from California, when they got off the bus in Tucson, and my brother-in-law was attacked."

Jacob's brother, Luke Couch, shared a somber outlook on Jacob’s chances of recovery: "He's not expected to make it right now. We've just been taking it how we can," he said, illustrating the grim reality the family is grappling with.

This incident has struck the Couch family at a time when they were already coping with profound loss. The cruel interruption of their journey home—a time meant for healing and reflection—by such a violent act has only compounded their sorrow and strife.

The local community in Arab, Alabama, and the broader online community have rallied supportively around the Couch family, sending prayers and financial aid to assist them during this unimaginable crisis.
