FBI director Kash Patel suspends 'deep state' actor Brian Auten

 April 13, 2025

In a controversial move, FBI Director Kash Patel has suspended analyst Brian Auten, citing previous accusations of misconduct related to major political investigations.

The Daily Mail reported that this decision underscores ongoing tensions within the FBI concerning alleged political biases and the handling of key investigations.

Kash Patel, appointed as FBI Director in 2025, rose to prominence with critical views on how certain investigations were managed under previous administrations.

Patel claimed that certain members within the FBI, including Brian Auten, participated in what he termed 'deep state' activities which purportedly undermined politically sensitive investigations.

One of the critical points in Patel's career was the publication of his book "Government Gangsters" in 2023, where he first named Brian Auten as a problematic figure within the FBI.

This text accused Auten explicitly of mishandling the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and attempting to derail the investigation into Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Background of Suspended FBI Analyst Brian Auten

Brian Auten's career at the FBI has been under scrutiny for several reasons. Beyond the accusations made by Patel, Auten faced discipline before his suspension: a 30-day suspension and a reassignment from the counterintelligence division followed an investigation that pinpointed errors in acquiring a surveillance warrant.

Despite these controversies, reports from the Justice Department’s Inspector General found no evidence suggesting that the Russia investigation, which Auten was involved in, was politically motivated.

This has added layers of complexity to the narrative around Auten's activities and the justifications for his ongoing suspension.

Adding to the controversies at the FBI, Patel's recent appointment of Steven Jensen as the assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office has also sparked criticism.

Jensen, known for referring to participants of the January 6 Capitol riot as 'terrorists', has been seen by some, especially pardoned rioters, as indicative of a bias against Trump supporters within the current administration.

Reactions to the Current FBI Leadership

Critics of Patel’s leadership have been vocal, particularly those from among the January 6 pardoned rioters. Richard Barnett and Philip Anderson, notable figures among the rioters, have condemned Patel and his deputy, Dan Bongino, asserting that their decisions represent a betrayal of the former president's supporters.

Anderson expressed his disappointment explicitly, stating, “Dan Bongino and Kash Patel betrayed us all. They promoted Steven Jensen who viciously persecuted Jan 6ers.”

These sentiments were echoed by another critic who claimed that Patel and Bongino had to explain why they chose Jensen, who they argue, harbors a disdain for Trump voters.

This wave of discontent is juxtaposed against Patel’s statements during his Senate confirmation, where he asserted, “It's a total mischaracterization. There will be no politicization at the FBI.

There will be no retributive actions taken by any FBI, should I be confirmed as FBI director.” These statements now contrast sharply with the actions observed under his directorship.

As these developments unfold, they paint a picture of an FBI caught between its past and future directions. Patel's actions, seen by some as corrective, are viewed by others as deeply divisive.

The suspension of Auten, while justified by Patel through prior allegations in his book, raises critical questions about the fine line between accountability and political retaliation within national security agencies.
