Maryland Governor Wes Moore announces extensive support for federal workers facing layoffs

 March 2, 2025

In a significant outreach to Maryland's federal workforce, Governor Wes Moore has unveiled robust support initiatives following recent federal layoffs.

This announcement includes a suite of resources designed to mitigate the effects of federal job cuts initiated by the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump has ordered massive cuts to the federal workforce in order to reduce the size and expense of maintaining the federal government, but that plan has been met with serious resistance.

A paramount discussion held via a roundtable included Moore-Miller Administration officials, affected employees, business and union leaders, emphasizing collaborative problem-solving and support.

Among the primary focuses of the announcements is the substantial expansion of the Maryland Public Servants Resource Website. The platform now lists about 130,000 job openings as part of its enriched toolkit, which also includes a Unified Benefits Screener to ease access to eligible benefits.

Virtual Events and New Career Paths Introduced

Aiming to facilitate transitions into new careers, particularly in education, a new resource page has been launched on Teach Maryland.

The initiative is devised to aid federal employees in exploring teaching positions within the state's schools, reflecting Maryland's strategic plan to strengthen education.

In tandem, the "Joining Team Maryland" virtual information session was arranged to inform federal workers about opportunities within the state government. Such proactive measures signify a robust governmental response to ensure continued employment and societal contributions of the federal workforce.

Furthermore, the administration has fostered local partnerships to set up job fairs and recruitment events. These are tailored specifically for federal employees, demonstrating a targeted approach to workforce reintegration.

In a move to expedite hiring processes for public service roles, Governor Moore signed three memorandums with major state departments.

These agreements involve the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Maryland Department of Budget and Management, and the Maryland State Department of Education, all aimed at smoothing the pathway into state employment.

Additionally, these initiatives are coupled with increased support to handle a surge in applications for state jobs. This administrative push ensures that applicants can navigate the employment landscape more fluidly, thereby securing positions that match their skills and experience.

Since the increase in state applications, various measures have been implemented to streamline career pathways in education, ensuring that new entrants are supported through their transition into teaching roles or other public service careers.

Impact and Response to Federal Workforce Challenges

Since its launch two weeks ago, the updated Maryland Public Servants Resource Website has attracted over 69,000 views, illustrating significant interest and urgent need among displaced workers. This platform also aids in coordinating Unemployment Insurance benefits, with more than 450 federal employees already supported through these services.

These strategic actions by Governor Moore have not gone unnoticed. Jonathan Hairston, a former AI Adoption Specialist at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and an impacted worker, expressed his gratitude at the roundtable, emphasizing the hope and dignified treatment these initiatives inspire among his peers.

Leaders at the state and national levels have also pronounced their support and determination to alleviate the hardships faced by Maryland’s federal employees. Lt. Gov. Aruna K. Miller described the situation as a moment of pain for many Maryland families, while U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen criticized the federal cuts as detrimental to both workers and national services.

Governor Moore's declarations reflected a committed stance to shield his state's workforce from federal instability. "We must protect our public servants," he explained, underscoring the essential nature of their roles and Maryland’s strategy to confront these challenges proactively.

Lt. Gov. Miller reiterated this commitment, ensuring that the state's leadership would actively work to deliver necessary relief and resources. These efforts are conceived not just as immediate support, but also as a movement towards long-term stability and growth for Maryland’s workforce.
