Trump considering merging USPS with Commerce Department

 February 24, 2025

President Donald Trump is contemplating significant alterations to the United States Postal Service, including a possible merger with the Commerce Department according to News Nation Now.

The U.S. Postal Service has delivered mail to every household, regardless of location. It was established during the Second Continental Congress with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. This long-standing service has connected the nation for nearly 250 years.

In a recent revelation by The Washington Post, President Trump has considered issuing an executive order to dismantle the Postal Service's governing board. This drastic step is seen as the beginning of major structural reforms.

President Trump also hinted during a Friday announcement at placing the USPS under the purview of the Commerce Department, turning it into an agency governed by the executive branch.

The proposed merger aims to address the Postal Service's financial inefficiencies, with Trump stating, “We want to have a post office that works well and doesn’t lose massive amounts of money."

Understanding the Independence of USPS

The Postal Reorganization Act of 1970, signed by President Richard Nixon following a nationwide postal strike, marked the USPS’s transformation into an independent entity. This separation was intended to help the Postal Service operate more like a business than a government-run department.

Despite its independence, the USPS has encountered financial difficulties, leading to considerations of modernization and rate hikes.

Last year, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced a 10-year plan aimed at modernizing the Postal Service which included warnings of forthcoming "uncomfortable" rate increases.

Trump has previously voiced his interest in privatizing the Postal Service, citing it as a long-discussed idea amongst various stakeholders, suggesting a move towards a more competition-driven model.

One major concern with the proposed changes is the potential impact on mail delivery services, especially in rural areas. Critics argue that past consolidations within the Postal Service have already slowed mail delivery, disproportionately affecting less accessible regions.

Erick Poston, commenting on the issue, highlighted the severity of the situation for rural residents, “They may not get any service. There reports that they may have to drive 30 minutes to an hour just to go to an urban community to get their mail, packages, prescriptions.”

Poston further noted the constitutional basis of the Postal Service, emphasizing that any significant restructuring would require Congressional approval due to the Postal Service's establishment under the U.S. Constitution.

Future of Daily Mail Delivery in Question

The proposed restructuring could also end the federal mandate that requires the USPS to deliver mail six days a week to every address in the country.

Such a change would fundamentally alter the landscape of American mail delivery, potentially leaving millions without reliable service.

This shift could exacerbate the challenges faced by the USPS in keeping up with the demands of national mail delivery, particularly in underserved areas. The ongoing debate on this topic reflects broader tensions between governmental oversight and the need for operational efficiency in public services.

As these discussions continue, the future of the USPS hangs in the balance. The outcome will not only affect its operational structure but also its role in American life.
