Trump Dismisses Federal Inspectors General Who Donated To Democrats

 January 30, 2025

In a dramatic late-night action, President Donald Trump fired 18 federal inspectors general. This significant reduction in oversight officials included several donors to Democratic parties, raising concerns about the influence of political affiliations on the administration's actions.

The Daily Mail reported that the dismissed inspectors general were among the 73 tasked with monitoring waste and abuse within federal agencies.

Their sudden removal was announced by Trump during a Saturday night press event aboard Air Force One.

This event follows the inspectors' crucial role in ensuring government accountability, highlighting the potential implications of their absence. Some of the officials let go had a history of supporting Democratic campaigns financially.

Details on the Affected Inspectors and Their Contributions

Loren Sciurba, previously at the Treasury Department, is among the most notable names. Federal Election Commission records revealed that Sciurba donated about $2,300 to Democratic efforts, including a contribution to Kamala Harris' 2024 campaign. Sciurba's giving dates back to 2014.

Similarly, Christi Grimm, Robert Storch, Michael Missal, Krista Boyd, and John Sopko were also inspectors general who had made financial contributions to Democratic causes. Notably, Robert Storch had given a total of $1,500 to former President Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee.

Storch was not merely a donor but also a critic of the current administration's policies, particularly the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

He stated that the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces "became overreliant on U.S. and coalition forces... Additionally, corruption within Afghan security institutions was a contributing factor in the collapse of the Afghan government."

Mark Greenblatt, another dismissed inspector who had previously donated to Republican campaigns, was vocal about the risks of these firings leading to politicization. He emphasized the importance of maintaining nonpartisan oversight to prevent such outcomes.

Conversely, Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department inspector general who praised Trump's report on James Comey, retained his position.

Trump expressed admiration for Horowitz's work, saying, "Michael Horowitz, we’re keeping," indicating selective firings based on perceived loyalty or usefulness.

Amid the upheaval, Trump assured the public that the vacant positions would be filled with qualified individuals, not merely loyalists. "We’ll put people in there that will be very good," he told reporters, attempting to mitigate concerns about the integrity of future appointments.

Legal and Organizational Ramifications of Firings

The legality of the mass dismissal of inspectors general remains under scrutiny. Their roles are pivotal in upholding transparency within government operations, and their sudden removal may pose challenges to that function.

State Department Inspector General Cardell Richardson, despite being dismissed, instructed his staff to continue their duties, defying the president's directive. This act of defiance highlights the potential for ongoing resistance within the agencies affected.

Critics and analysts, including Tom Jones from the Heritage Foundation, argue that inspectors general are vital for rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse within government agencies. The recent firings could jeopardize the effectiveness of such oversight.

The reactions to the dismissals have been mixed, with supporters of the president applauding his steps to reorganize and supposedly streamline government efficiency. However, critics argue that this move could undermine the independence crucial to the inspectors' roles, potentially leading to decreased accountability and increased governmental misconduct.
