Andy Ogles Proposes Amendment To Allow Trump's Third Presidential Run

 January 24, 2025

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has taken a significant step by introducing a resolution aimed at amending the U.S. Constitution to permit a third presidential term for Donald Trump.

The Washington Examiner reported that specific language in the resolution seeks to modify the 22nd Amendment, allowing Trump to seek a nonconsecutive third term while barring former President Barack Obama from running again.

The proposed amendment centers on changing the existing presidential term limits set by the 22nd Amendment, which currently restricts presidents to two terms.

Ogles's resolution introduces the possibility for a president to serve three terms, provided not more than two are consecutive.

Understanding The Proposed Constitutional Changes

Ogles believes this change is essential for Trump, who he argues has proved himself uniquely capable of leading the nation.

According to Ogles, Trump’s two election victories in 2016 and 2024 demonstrate his enduring appeal and leadership efficacy.

"President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years," Ogles said during the announcement of his resolution. He emphasized the necessity of Trump's continuation in office to restore and strengthen the nation.

Notably, the resolution has been crafted to exclude certain former presidents from returning to the White House. For example, Barack Obama, who served two consecutive terms from 2009 to 2017, would not be eligible to run again under this new amendment.

The path to amending the Constitution is fraught with challenges. The resolution must garner a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate before being sent to the states, where three-fourths must ratify it.

With current political alignments, this seems a steep climb, given the substantial opposition from Democratic lawmakers.

Trump's remarks have fueled speculation and debate over his political future. He has made several comments about serving more than the usual two terms, including humorously suggesting at a rally in Nevada in 2020 and again following his 2024 victory.

"We’re going to win four more years in the White House. And then after that, we’ll negotiate, right? Because we’re probably, based on the way we were treated, we are probably entitled to another four after that,” Trump said, mingling jest with political ambition.

Ogles' Strong Advocacy For Trump's Leadership

Ogles has been a vocal supporter of Trump, even amid controversial moments like the hush money criminal case in New York in May 2024.

He sees Trump as critical to reversing what he considers the failures of the Biden administration.

"He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal," Ogles passionately argued in support of his resolution.

In contrast, opponents like Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), who has introduced a resolution against Trump’s potential third term, worry about the implications of his frequent jokes turning into serious political maneuvers.

"This is his MO," Goldman warned. "He will drop in something outlandish, claim he’s joking, but then he starts to repeat it more and more, and it starts to become normalized."
