Poll Suggests Trump Supporters Believe Trump Will Pardon Jan. 6 Defendants

 November 29, 2024

A recent poll shows many U.S. voters expect President-elect Donald Trump to pardon individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riots.

The Hill reported that the anticipation of presidential pardons for those convicted in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots has been highlighted in a new poll conducted by Politico/Morning Consult.

Released just days before the end of November 2024, this poll captures a significant sentiment among U.S. voters following Trump's presidential election win over Vice President Harris.

Nearly 69% of voters consider it at least somewhat likely that Trump will issue pardons for the riot participants.

This category includes 40% who believe it’s “very likely” and 29% who think it’s “somewhat likely.” On the other hand, a smaller segment of the population is skeptical, with 15% viewing such a decision as unlikely.

Public Opinion Split on Potential Trump Pardons

Throughout his campaign, Trump articulated a poignant critique of the previous administration’s treatment of the January 6 defendants.

He vowed to “rapidly review the cases of every political prisoner unjustly victimized by the Harris regime," promising pardons on his first day back in office. His staunch defense of the rioters, whom he frequently referred to as warriors and victims, echoes through his campaign speeches and public statements.

"All they were doing is protesting a rigged election. That’s what they were doing," Trump declared, emphasizing his perception of the events that led to violent clashes and a temporary halt in the certification of election results. These comments further solidified his stance on his voter base, evident in his post-election plans.

Trump’s consistent narrative around the events of January 6 and his characterization of the participants has played a significant role in shaping public opinion. His descriptions paint a picture of the rioters not as violators of law but as individuals expressing political dissent.

The anticipation of pardons comes after more than 1,500 people were charged and over 640 were sentenced for their involvement in the January 6 attack.

These numbers reflect significant legal proceedings aimed at addressing the unprecedented assault on the Capitol. The Justice Department had pursued a federal election subversion case against Trump, which was dismissed following the 2024 election, influenced by DOJ policies and a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.

This recent poll not only reflects voters' expectations but also exposes the profound divisions remaining in U.S. society about the interpretations and implications of January 6.

Conducted from November 20-22, 2024, the survey included 4,012 registered voters, providing a broad lens on the populace's stance with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Future Implications of Voter Expectations

As the president-elect prepares to take office, the U.S. remains gripped by the consequences of the Capitol riots and their ongoing political reverberations.

The possible pardons hold significant weight not only for those directly affected but also for the broader narrative of justice and accountability in America.

The political ramifications of such pardons could also influence the legislative and judicial landscapes, potentially impacting how political violence is addressed in the future.

With Trump’s inauguration approaching, many are watching closely to see whether his actions will align with his pre-election promises or if the reality of governance will modulate his previous positions.
