Nevada And Washington Deploy National Guard Ahead Of Tuesday's Election

 November 2, 2024

To ensure voter safety and order, the National Guard has been deployed in both Nevada and Washington due to recent threats and incidents disturbing the election processes.

The Washington Examiner reported that Nevada and Washington have taken significant preemptive measures to safeguard the democratic process. Both states have called on the National Guard, a move initiated by their respective governors, signaling mounting concerns over election security.

In Washington, Governor Jay Inslee marked a decisive response to a string of unsettling events where multiple ballot boxes were intentionally set ablaze, not only in his state but also in neighboring Oregon.

These incidents have cast a shadow of insecurity over the voting process, prompting immediate action from state authorities.

Governor Inslee's actions were grounded in recent intelligence from the Department of Homeland Security, which flagged the current election cycle as particularly vulnerable to threats. It is within this context that Inslee announced the National Guard's activation from November 4th through November 7th.

Election Security Takes Center Stage

Adopting a proactive stance, Governor Inslee detailed that the Guard’s involvement would aid in everything from traffic control to ensuring the physical security of polling locations.

"Our democracy thrives when it is safe for every citizen to vote without fear or interference," expressed Inslee, illustrating his administration's resolve to maintain civil order.

Similar concerns have echoed in Nevada, where Governor Joe Lombardo also took the step to fortify election security. He has deployed 60 members of the National Guard who are now on standby to assist in critical areas like traffic enforcement and protection of election infrastructure.

The involvement of the National Guard is not unprecedented in the context of U.S. elections. In the 2022 midterm elections, 14 states utilized Guard personnel to bolster their election processes, carrying out tasks ranging from cybersecurity to logistical support.

This repeated utilization underscores the evolving role of the National Guard in ensuring smooth electoral operations amidst rising concerns of interference.

Governor Lombardo, echoing his commitment to citizen protection, highlighted his experience in crisis management. "As a first responder, I know first-hand the importance of being prepared, and this decision reflects my commitment to safety and preparedness on Election Day," he stated.

Ensuring Public Confidence in Elections

These measures also respond directly to broader national worries about the security of elections—anxiety that has grown since the contentious 2016 and 2020 elections, where foreign interference and claims of fraudulent activities dominated headlines.

Election security experts have noted the importance of such precautionary measures, especially in a climate where public trust in the electoral process is wavering.

The assurance of safety is pivotal in encouraging voter turnout and ensuring the legitimacy of election results.

Community leaders and local law enforcement agencies have also welcomed the involvement of the National Guard.

Many express relief at the reinforcements, hopeful that their presence will deter potential disruptions and enable a smoother execution of voting processes.

Looking forward, authorities will monitor the situation closely, ready to adjust their strategies as needed based on emergent threats or challenges during the election period. The ultimate goal, as stated by both Governors, is to preserve and protect the sanctity of the voting process.
