The Washington Examiner reported that the seizure happened on Monday, triggering a series of revelations about the aircraft's origins and its contentious usage. In April 2023, Maduro’s associates orchestrated the purchase of a $13 million Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft from a Florida-based seller using a shell company.
This move was purportedly to mask the true ownership and dodge sanctions. Following the purchase, the plane was transported to Venezuela where it has been primarily used for international travel, frequently ferrying President Maduro from a Venezuelan military base.

Matthew Axelrod, a U.S. Department of Commerce official, accentuated the intent behind seizing the jet, stating it was meant to send a firm message against the illicit utilization of aircraft purchased from the U.S. for the benefit of sanctioned Venezuelan officials.
Attorney General Merrick Garland strongly condemned the actions of Maduro and his associates, emphasizing the deliberate violation of U.S. sanctions and export controls.
