US Confiscates Private Jet Owned By Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Over Sanction Breaches

 September 2, 2024

The U.S. government has seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's aircraft in the Dominican Republic due to allegations of sanctions violations.

The Washington Examiner reported that the seizure happened on Monday, triggering a series of revelations about the aircraft's origins and its contentious usage. In a bold move underscoring the U.S. stance on international sanctions enforcement, authorities took control of a private jet belonging to Venezuelan President Maduro.

This drastic measure comes amidst escalating tensions following a highly controversial election in Venezuela.

The Department of Justice clarified that the seizure was specifically in response to violations related to sanctions and export controls.

These are critical components of U.S. foreign policy tools used to regulate international conduct and national security threats.

Chronology of The Seized Jet's Purchase and Use

In April 2023, Maduro’s associates orchestrated the purchase of a $13 million Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft from a Florida-based seller using a shell company.

This move was purportedly to mask the true ownership and dodge sanctions. Following the purchase, the plane was transported to Venezuela where it has been primarily used for international travel, frequently ferrying President Maduro from a Venezuelan military base.

This type of operation is closely monitored under international law, especially concerning transactions including high-level political figures under sanctions.

The U.S. authorities highlighted this transaction as a direct violation of export controls and sanctions designed to prevent such deals.

On August 28, 2024, shortly before the jet's seizure, President Maduro addressed supporters from his presidential palace, reflecting the increasing political stir in Caracas following the disputed presidential election.

The U.S. State Department has been vocal about its non-recognition of the election results, supporting opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the rightful winner.

Matthew Axelrod, a U.S. Department of Commerce official, accentuated the intent behind seizing the jet, stating it was meant to send a firm message against the illicit utilization of aircraft purchased from the U.S. for the benefit of sanctioned Venezuelan officials.

Legal Precedents and International Support

Attorney General Merrick Garland strongly condemned the actions of Maduro and his associates, emphasizing the deliberate violation of U.S. sanctions and export controls.

"They illegally smuggled the plane," Garland said, reinforcing the dedication of the U.S. Justice Department to pursue those who attempt to subvert American regulations and national security.

The Falcon 900EX was subsequently transferred to the U.S. Southern District of Florida, with significant assistance from the Dominican Republic.

This transfer underlines the cooperative relationship between the U.S. and its international partners in enforcing legal and ethical standards across borders.

The actions align with a standing executive order issued by former President Donald Trump, which prohibits transactions with any entities acting on behalf of the Venezuelan government. The Department of Commerce further specifies export controls particularly aimed at preventing military advancements through unauthorized channels.

This seizure is part of a broader strategy employed by the U.S. to apply pressure on the Venezuelan government. By intercepting the aircraft, the U.S. not only enforces its laws but also solidifies its position against what it views as a regime that undermines democracy and regional stability.
