California Drops Plan for K-12 Coronavirus Vaccine Mandate

As Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) allows a three-year-old “state of emergency” to expire at the end of February, the State of California is scrapping a plan to require the coronavirus vaccine for children in grades K through 12. After the vaccine had received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2021, Newsom announced that K-12 students would be required to receive the vaccine for full-time, in-person instruction. However, for logistical reasons, the implementation of the policy was postponed.

The K-12 vaccine requirements were still a distinct possibility, just one year ago, as a Democrat in the state legislature offered a bill to make the coronavirus shot one of the state’s required vaccinations for attending school.

However, thanks to Newsom’s decision to let the state of emergency end, the policy has been scrapped according to a report by Breitbart News.

The California Department of Public Health said, in a statement-

“The state has dropped its plan to require the COVID-19 vaccination for K-12 students as the state of emergency comes to an end Feb. 28, after nearly three years.” And…That said, “we continue to strongly recommend COVID-19 immunization for students and staff to keep everyone safer in the classroom,”

All of California’s 6.7 million public and private students, would have been subject to this mandate. However, enforcing the requirement, would have posed a challenge, given the vaccine’s waning immunity. The real question is how many students were needlessly vaccinated for COVID 19, given their extremely low susceptibility rate to this virus?

Further what mandates will they need to scrap at the college level now that the three-year-old state of Emergency is coming to an end. It was so bad that some college students transferred out of CA state colleges, to escape the forced mandate. Hopefully, the college level students will gain their freedom from this mandate as well.

Last week, President Biden informed Congress that he will be ending the state of emergency, as well as the public health emergency on the coronavirus pandemic on May 11. Though this move will jeopardize his emergency-based tuition plan, as promised to students for loan reduction/forgiveness, it will close a chapter after more than three years.

That Newsom is scrapping the plan for vaccine mandates for K-12, Californians can be sure the Governor has other high-ticket expenditures, perhaps mandates of their own, up his sleeve in 2023, to wreak havoc on his constituents. California is the most regulated state in the union, and works constantly to keep that status. Just because he is scrapping one program, doesn’t mean he has become fond of individual freedom. That is a fact to be sure of.
